JOHN KELSHAM, Esquier, of
Hedecrone, Canterbury Diocese, 6 April 1434, seeing approaching me the
presence of death &e. To be buried in the church of the blessed
apostles Peter and Paul within the chauncel of the blessed Mary the
Virgin of Hedecoone aforesaid. To the high altar 20s. To the lights
there 6s. 8d. To the sacristan there for ringing the bells 20d. To the
parish clerk 6d. To the minister of the House of Motynden 100s., to each
brother of the same house 6s. 8d. To Sir Geoffrey Newynton of the house
aforesaid a silver saltseller.
I leave to the Prioress 26s. 8d. and to each canon there 6s. 8d. [?which
house]. to the prior of the church of Christ Canterbury a silver cup
gilt with a cover to his own personal use for his life and to remain to
Christ’s Church Canterbury. To my co-freres of the house of Shene
100s. To the Mondaster of Boxle 5 marcs. To the Friars Preachers of
Canterbury 13s. 4d. To the Carmelite Friars of Aylesford 13s. 4d. and of
Lossenham a gold ring with a sappire which is good and healthy to cure
the eye (aui est bonus et salubris ad oculam sanandum).
I leave to Roger Honeyngton a young ‘don’ horse. I leave to John
Darell another young horse ‘Baye’. To William Barys another ‘Sorell’.
I leave to Thomas Kelsham my best gown, a silver salt, two bulls, two
bullocks, two mares, 6 seams of whete and 6 of oats. To Arnold brother
of the said Thomas, my second bed &e. To John Norton a silver salt
and a horse ‘Bay’. To Johan Norton my sister a gold ring with two
feathers (plumeis?). To Elizabeth daughter of the late John Hawte a bed
of ‘Tapestrywerk’, a girdle black silver and gilt, 6 siver spoons
&e. If she die then to the right heirs of John Kelsham Esq.
aforesaid. To Alexander Clyfford my godson a gold chain with a cross. To
Roger Northwode my godson a pair of gold ancorum with ‘le Brock’
and a sword. To John Northwode my best silver girdle. To Bartholomew
Selengere my godson a gold ring with a sappire. To Agnes who was wife of
Ralph Hadde a gown ‘sanguin’ color lined with ‘gray bysetts’. To
John Bentyng a silver gilt girdle. Also ------------- [Here the
manuscript breaks off. Apparently in making up the register a leaf (or
leaves) has been lost].
Probate Act missing for above reason. The will entered before this was
proved 5th August 1432 and that after on 22 July 1432 which
indicates they were not entered in very strict order. The date is
