THOMAS CHERELL, citizen and habardasher of London, 26 Aprill 1540. (32 Henry VIII). To be buried before the chapell dore of Saint Katheryn vnder the Rode lofte within the parishe churche of Saint Magne the martir nye the Bridge of London wher I am parishener. Toward the making of a newe steple within the said churche £3. 6. 8. To the fraternitie of Guylde of our blessyd Lady within the said churche founded 13s. 4d. Toward the making and sustentacon of the Almes box within the same parish 6s. 8d.
I release and forgive Robert Chapman my brother in lawe all detts. I pardon and release Rychard Woodhouse, haberdasher, all detts. Also Thomas Atkynson habardassher £3 of his dett of £12. Also John Anable all detts.
I bequeth to Edward Typpyng and his wife to either of them one black gowne. To Roger Wolhouse to ayde and helpe my wief oon blacke gowne. To every man of my crafte being of the clothing and at my burying one spice bun and a cake and in lykewise to every man of the brotherhed of or blessed Lady a spice bun and a cake. To four persons of the same fraternytie that shall bere my body to the churche 13s. 4d. To my syster Alice Chapman 20s. To either of her two children 20s. and I woll that the same Alice Chapman my suster shall have her dwellyng free during her lief in all that my Tenement that she occupieth and dwellith in set and being at Charyng in the Countie of Kent, except the rent due to the chief Lord of the fe therof.
To my Fellowship of Habardashers of London for a recreation among them to be hadd £4. To euery of my apprentices and servaunts as well men as women being abyding within my dwellyng howse one blacke gowne. To Andrewe Fraunces, John Wall, Elizabeth Cade, Johanne Sparrowbe the same. For masse for a year in chappell of Saint Kateryn £8, also an honest prest and good name to syng and pray for my sowle my fader and mother and all xpen soules in the parish churche of Charyng in Kent by the space of one hole yere and for his salary or wags. £6. 13. 4.
My goods to be divided in three egall parts according to the Laudable vse and custume of the Citie of London, one parte for my selfe, the second to Johanne my wief and the thyrd to Alice my doughter. Joane my wife my sole executrix with my part shall paye my detts, legacies &e. and resydue to her and
Alice my doughter. Ouerseers John Sampson and William Johnson. Yeven in presence of John Sampson, John Sturgyen, William Johnson, John Rutter and other.
