8 June 1490. Thomas Portreffe of Cranebroke. To be buried in the churchyard of the church of St. Dunstan the Bishop of Cranebroke. To the light of the Blessed Virgin Mary 8d. To Godleve my wife two cows, three seames of whete, three seames of malt and all my household implements. I leave a table of Alabasher to the altar of St. Nicholas in the foresaid church of 5 marks (value). Residue to my executors John Southlande and William Cusshenam to dispose for the health of my soul. (Latin)
This is the last will &e. of me Thomas Portroffe of Cranebroke declared by me personally to John Southlond and Wm. Cusshman, Richard Moore and John Karkeryye the yonger my feoffees. They to deliver to John myne eldest sonne all my lands in the parish of Marden so that Robert Ylcoke, Wm. Cussheman [a blank] deliver to my said feoffees 4 peces of land in the which they been feoffed for suerte of the mariage of Roberge the wife of the said John my sonne and yf they refuse then my said feoffes to deliver in fee symple vnto William my sonne all my landes in the parish of Merden. Also I will John my sonne fuid sufficient suerte to pay to Godleve his moder an annuete of 13s. 4d. by yere. William my sonne my mesuage in Cranebroke strete wt a garden and 6 peces of land called Omyndenes, Barretts and Johetyngs, to pay to the said Godleve his moder an anniuytie of 13s. 4d. by yere.
My feoffes to deliver to James my sonne my principall messuage wt 2 gardyns, 5 pecis of land called Wellefeld, Crokid croft, le Crofte, Crotynfeld and Gromeham and 5 other peces called Youlelelands, Netherposfeld and Benyndenystownys, forthwith a Resonable way to a welle being in the landes callid Bakks as long as the said Jamys and his heires used and occupied Tannerscrafte and so wil on bothe sydes of the saide welle, finding sufficient suerte to pay to the said Godleve his moder an annuete of 20s. by yere.
My feoffees shall suffer John my youngest sonne a none after my decesse to take proffit of my messuage with a garden and 6 peces of land callid Bakks and 4 other pecs. of land callid Newdyke, Upperposefeld, Synnesfeld and Stonehamfeld vntylle the said John comith to the age of 21 yeres finding sufficient suerte to paye to the said Godleve his moder an annuete of 13s. 4d. by yere and when he is 21 to have the fee simple.
And the said Godleve my wife to have hir dwelling in the Kechin of my mesuage in Cranebroke strete with a chamber in the said Kechin and a nother chambr in the Trefaunce and hir aysement in the halle for fyre and flete and in the bakhouse and garden.
All other landes to be sold to the mariage of Alice my daughter £10 in pens and penyworthis.
Also I ordeyne of the said receyte to Johan my doughter the wif of Stephen Benskyn 13s. 4d. To John and Thomas sonnes of the said Stephen 6s. 8d. To Benett my doughter the wife of Edward Castelin 6s. 8d. To an honest priest 10 marcs to sing for a yere for my soule.
