JOHN ROBERD  20 January 1460. John Roberd of the parish of Cranebroke [Cranbrook]. To be buried in the church of St. Dunstan of Cranebroke [Cranbrook] before the altar of St. Giles. To the parish priest 12d. To the parish clerk 6d. To William Elys, sacristan 12d. and to his son 4d. To high altar of Goutherst [Goudhurst] 3s. 4d., and of Merden 20d. To the lights of the parish church of Cranebroke [Cranbrook] 6s. 8d. To each of my godsons 12d. Residue to Agnes my wife and Walter and Stephen my sons, which Agnes with Henry, prior of Cowmwelle, Thomas Hendle and William Clerk I make my executors with John Asshbourneham, John Engeham and John Heansill as supervisors. To able xpen people &e John Roberd of Cranebroke [Cranbrook] sendith greting the 20 Janeuer the yere of King Henry the sext 39th. I will that Rauf Bever have certeyn landes callid Bakers to him and his heres to fynde a lampe brennygn by fore the sacrament in the chauncell of Cranebroke [Cranbrook] by day and nyght imperpetuite, the said Rauf to perchase lond to the value of 6s. 8d. yerely to be charged with the said londes to the finding of the said lampe. My feoffees shall deliver to John Roberd the sonne of Stephen Roberd a tenement in Stapilherst callid Kebill of 20 acres and a pece of lond which sum tyme was John Hoppers I purchased of oon John William and Brice, when he comith to the age of 24. Also Thomas Togenesshe to have a mesuage called Lobbys. Also to my doughters of my first wife and to ther housbondes alle the landes in Merden that were of the enheritaunce of my first wife and a pece of land called Perifeld and two parcelles of land that late wer John Aleynes and 6s. 8d. of rent of a pece of land late Herry Ricardis at Collestalhale and oon acre in Wellefeld sumtyme Wenbornes forthwith a parcell of land I called Prychell and a parcell of land beside Longmede which I had in eschange for another parcell sumtyme waniseses. To Agnes my wife an annuyte of 5 marcs out of my maner or tenement callid Deryngdale and 5 marcs oute of all my landes in Gowtherst and Cranebroke [Cranbrook]. Also to Water my sonne all my landes and tenements in the shire of Sussex as wele wt in the Portes as with oute when he cometh to 24 yeres.
To Stephen my sonne all my other landes and tenements in the shire of Kent when 24.
Also I wil alle my rents, landes and milles I perchased of Thomas Beachinden and all Podysland be endewed and morteised for a chaunteye of a prest saying masse wekly monthly and quarterly and so yerely in the church of Cranebroke and in noone other place, of the value of 10 marks imperpetuite. I will that Sr. Robert Anglisby have the said
s’vice of the said chaumberye terme of his life.
Also I wol that there be perchased howsing and grounde for 7 poor menne at Cranebroke [Cranbrook] and for 7 pour men at Goutherst taking euery powr manne yerely 13s. 4d. at euery quarter by evin porcion and for the reparacion of there house 13s. 4d., and myne heires to have the elecion of the said power menne that so shall pray for my soule, my wifes and frendes soules and all cristen sowles. Also I wol that the chauntry of Goutherst be of yerely value of 10 mark and alle the alines that I have ordeyned for powr men that it be reisid oute of my manor of Deryngdale in Sussex, and 5 mark yerely in clothing of 13 power men moormen, gowne, hoode or cote.
To Agnes my wif 20 marcs. I wol that £20 be disposed for the remeving of the Roode lofte in the church of Cranbroke [Cranbrook] to be sett ouer the high chauncell there. Forty shillings to the making of fowle wayes bytwene Dunstones Crosse and Glastingburye and 40s. appron an honest Tombe ouer me and Agnes my wife by fore the auter of Seint Egidy with a scripture making mension of vs.
If any of my sonnes Water or Stephen or bothe be maried wt in the age of 24 my feoffes to deliver linelode to the furthering of him by the discrecion of Robert Horne, John Gygham and William Saundys.
If the said ordynaunce may not be performid of my goodes then the residue of the profits of my landes to my said sonnes. The shuf of my household to my wife and hir sonnes Water and Stephen.
To my maiden Johan 40s. to hir mariage. Maister Robert Hoo parsone of thart 20s. to pray for me. Robert Horne to have the gouernance and Rewle of my sonnes Water and Stephen and said Robert Horne and John Engehau to take profits til my sones come to 24 yer. Agnes my wife to have a place Thomas Horden dwellid in alle the terme of her lief which I purchasid of John Newynton. Roberge my servant to have to hir mariage 40s. with that she be rewlid by Agnes my wife.
