The year 1424 according to the course and computation of the English Church, second indiction, 7th day of the month of April dwelling in the house of the worshipful (honesti) man Thomas Roberard citizen and armourer of the City of London in the parish of St. Magnus next London Bridge, I JOHN ROUWE, tanner, of Maydeston [Maidstone] in Kent sick in body &e. To be buried in holy ground (ecclesiastice) where it shall please God &e. He gave to the parish church of the Blessed Mary of Maydeston [Maidstone] 3s. 4d. [N.B. The new foundation of All Saints College had not then been made. The older parish church was dedicated in honour of the Blessed Virgin]. He gave to the making of copes for the said church of St. Mary 6s. 8d. He gave to the fraternity of Salve Regina in the church of St. Magnus aforesaid 13s. 4d.
He gave to Master Richard now parish chaplain of the church of St. Magnus his confessor 12d. He gave to each child or boy of William Rouw his son to their marriage or assistance 6s. 8d.
His executors as soon as may be after his decease are to sell his ‘place’ or tenement with garden adjacent called Padsole in the town and parish of Maydeston [Maidstone] in which William Barbulton ‘tincher suie woder’ is enfeoffed, to pay debts &e. Residue of sale to Johan his wife.
Residue of all his goods &e to his executors the foresaid Thomas Robelard armourer and Thomas Leget citizen and goldsmith of London.
Present ‘honestus et discretius vir’ John Swanne, pewterer, John Waryn, goldsmith, and Walter Holme, haberdassher of London and I John Bydeford clerk of the diocese of Worcester, citizen of London testify –
