16 Oct. 1532. John Norton of Middelton (Milton near
Sittingbourne) in Kent, Knyght. To be buryed in the parishe churche of
Myddelton aforesaide in a newe chapell on the southe side of the same churche
by the Sepulture of dame Johane late my wyfe deceased. To every of the lightes
of the holly Trinitie of oure Ladye in the said Chapell of oure ladye of Petie
in the body of the said churche and of Sainte James in the same churche 6/8.
To the light of Saint George in the same churche a complete harnes and 6/8 of
mony. I will my extours in conveniet tyme after my decease cause to be made a
?conveyent tombe of marbell over my buryall and over the buryall of the saide
Dame Johane with the picture of me and of the said Dame Johane and skucchens
of oure armes to be made and graven in brasse and fixed uppon suche place of
the said tombe as my extours shall thinke most convenient and there uppon to
expend £13.6.8.
I will my extours bestowe £10 in makynge a newe windowe of stone
on the north side of the highe chauncell in the said churche ageynste where
the olde organs were wonte to stande. Item: I bequeth £23.6.8. to the makynge
of a newe ruff [sic] and pewis over and in the said chapell where my tombe
shall stande. My extours do ordeyne and provide for and in the day of my
buryenge in convenient place to be done 100 masses with diriges and observancs
accordyngly to the same and in like maner at my monethes daye and mynde and
shall deall and distribute to poure people £20. An honest priste by the space
of 20 yere to singe for my soule, the soule of the said Dame Johane and of our
Fathers and mothers and benefactires sumtyme in the saide chapell where I
entende to be buryed sumtyme in the parishe churche of Sheldewich and somtyme
in the Chapell at the manor of Norwoode by the discrecon and election of myne
heires.
I will suche one of the monkes of the monastry of Saint Savior in
Faversham as the Abbote shall appointe shall wekely durynge the space of fyve
yeres saie thre masses before the Roode of Petye in the said Monastery in the
chapell for my soule, for the soule of Sibill sometyme my wiffe and all Xten
soules and to have for every masse 4d. Unto my Lorde Abbote of
Faversham that nowe is to pray for my soule £5. To the Abbote and Covente of
Saint Augusyns besydes Canterbury to do an obite for my soule within one
moneth next after my decease in the same Monastery Vli. Unto the
Prioure and Covent of Cristeschurch in Canterbury for like cause £5. To the
Freres Observants in Canterbury, the Frers Augystynes of Canterbury, Freres
Dominicans of Canterbury, To the Freres of Aylesfourth in Kent, to the Priores
of the Mynster in Shepie [gifts for trentalls, etc]. To the repacons of the
churche of Sheldewyche to be don by the oversight of myne extours £6.13.4. To
the repacons of the parishe churche of Newenton £3.6.8. of the parishe
cherches of Hartlipe, Halgestowe, Wade, Bobbynge, Preston next Faversham and
Sainte Cosme and Damyan in the Bleane 20s (each).
To the amendmente of the highe waye betwyne landes late Higgens
nowe Robert Tyntts and the lands or orcherd late Wm Woodes in
Bobbynge 26/8.
Unto Dme Jane my wyfe all such plate and housholde stufe as she
brought with her at her maryage. Unto John Norton my sonne all my silver
plate, my great chayne of golde, all my other chaynes, rings and juells of
golde or silver and the some of £525 sterlinge in mony, cattall and corne,
also all my lease interest and terme of yeres in the maners and farmes
underwith, that is to saie in the farme of the manure of the Hundred of
Middelton and Merden, in the farme called Reade, the parsonage of Newenton,
the ferme of Barkesore and Swaynernysdowne unto thend and terme of the yeres.
Unto Thomas Grene my servunte all my lease and terme of yeres in
the ferme of Trianston. Unto Richard Norton my servunte all my lease in a
house in Rayneham whiche I holde to farme by lease of the priour and Covent of
Leadis.
Unto Fridiswith my doughter £10. Unto my brother Thomas Drilonde
£10. Ursula wife of John Fynch £10. John Norton my brothers sonne £10. To
every of Thos Norton, Clement Norton and Mathew Norton sonnes of my
said brother V mrks. To every of John Drilonde thelder, Jn Drilonde the yonger,
Anne Drilonde, Katheryn Drilonde and Elizabeth Drilonde, sonnes and doughters
of my brother Richard Drylonde V mks. To every of John Geddinge, Elizabeth
Geddinge and Anne Geddinge sone and doughter of my brother Thos Geddinge V
mark [if any of above die before 18 then the part to those living]. To every
of Jamys Drilande and Elizabeth Drilande sone and doughter of my brother
Thomas Drilande V marks. To my suster Margaret Geddinge X mrks. To Thos Grene
my servunte £200 sterlinge. To Thomas Wicke late my servunte xls.
To John Godfraye my servunte £V and all the dette he owith me. To Thos
Catlett my servunte xls and all the dette he owithe me. To Adam
Pynchet my servunte xls. Richard Norton my servunte £10. John
Gayton late my servunt 20s. Wm Thomas my servunt 26/8.
Alyce Fordred my servunt 20s. Peter Wetherley my servunt £3.6.8.
Margaret Ricarde late my servunt xxs. At my twelmonthes mynde £10.
Resydue to performance of my testament and will exors shall take
revenues of all my landes etc. in Kent (being no parcell of the manoure of
Norwoode nor landes given to Dame Jane my wife for her Joyntour or Dower) unto
the tyme John my sayde sonne cum to the full age of 21 yeres towardes the
performance of the same testament and last will and I make extours John Norton
my sonne, my brother Richarde Drilonde, my brother Thos Geddynge,
Robert Maycote gent, and Thos Grene my servunte.
I will and gyve to either of John Hales one of the barons of the
kynges exchequore and to Cristofer Hales the Kinges Generall Attorney for
their good ayde and counsell to be gyven by them to my sonne and extours
£6.13.4.
Item: where I owght to the saide John Hales £120 by a bill under
and subscribed with my hand I woll the said John Norton my sonne shall paie to
the said John Hales the said some and if he refuse my extours to take the said
£120 out of the some of £525 before to my sone willed and assigned. To said
sonne John all my apparell and stuff beddynge, hangings, brasse, pewter,
spitts cobyrons and anndyrons etc. and I make overseer Dame Jane my wyff.
Wit. John Seth thelder, Thos Hogeson, Thos
Bartram, vicar of Bobbynge, Wm Blackborne, John Reade, Peter
Wetherley.
This is: I will John Norton my sonne shall have to hym and his
heires my manor of Norwoode, ?Chastners and all my landes etc. in the said
Countie which sometyme were of John Norwoode Esquire and for lacke of yssue
shall remayne to Fridiswith my doughter and her heires and for lacke to
remayne to John Norton my brothers sone and for defaulte to remayne to John
Geddynge sone of my brother Thomas Geddynge and for lack of issue male to the
right heires of me John Norton, Knyght.
I will that Dame Jane my wyfe have for her lyfe all suche
my manors, landes and tenements as be to hir assigned by deede therof by me to
the Revernde Father in Gode Edwarde Estaples, Bisshoppe of Methe, Thomas
Nevill, Henry Grey, Knyght and other to the use of me Sr John Norton and the
said Dame Jane made.
I will that the said John Norton my sone whan he cometh to 21 and
after deceas of Dame Jane my wif shall have to hym and his heires my manour or
tenement called Lesecourte, my landes and tenements called Godfrayes and
Gustmers and all other my landes and tenements etc. in the parisshes of
Sheldwiche, Sellynge and Badlesmer except therof a tenement and certeyn landes
whiche I purchased of the churche wardens of Sheldewiche which I will that
Robert Tynte otherwise called Cooke have to hym during his life, the remaynder
unto John my sone. If John deceas without heires the lands and tenements
called Godfrayes and Gustmers shall remayne unto theldyste sone of my brother
Richard Drilonde and for lacke to my right heires. Said sone John when 21 and
after deceas of Dame Jane shall have my lands etc. called Upper Howletts and
Nether Howletts in the parisshes of Faversham, Luddenham and Ore whiche were
gyven in the tayle unto Raynolde Norton my Father and Katheryne his wif my
mother, also my manore of Ripple and all my landes lyinge in the parisshes of
Hollyngborne, Thorneham, Barsted, Huckinge and Detlynge wiche I late purchased
of Thos Whichcote and Margarett his wiffe and for lacke of issue to
remayne unto John Geddynge sone of my brother Thos Geddynge and for
default to my rigjht heires.
Also the said John Norton my sone when 21 all my purchased landes
and tenements in Middelton, Bobbynge, Iwade, Newenton, Hartlipe, Halgestowe
and Upchurche to him and his heires. And also all other my landes and
tenements, wods, etc. that is to saie my maner or tenement callyd Lessecourte,
my lands etc. callyd Godfrayes and Gustmers, all other my lands and tenements
in the parishes of Sheldewiche, Sellynge and Badlesmere, my lands etc. called
Upper and Nether Howletts, my manour of Rypple and all other my lands etc. in
the parishes of Hollyngborn, Thorneham, Barstede, Huckynge and Detlinge, uppon
condycon that the saide John Norton my sone, his heires etc. kepe perform and
fulfill all covents, grants, promises, etc. in one Indenture bytwyne me and
the Revd Father in God [as before] made 26 January 21 yere of Kynge
Henry the Eight. And also that the same John Norton do discharge and acquit
and save harmelesse one Sir Wm Kempe of Wye in Kent, Knyght of one
certeyne obligacon of £500 dated 26 Jan 21 H VII in the wiche the said Sir Wm
by the name of Wm Kempe Esq. with me ys bounde for the fulfilling
of the said Indenture.
And also that the same John Norton within one yere when he shall
come to 21 yeres do by his obligacon in dew forme bynde hym self unto the said
Wm Kempe in the some of £600 to discharge the same Wm
Kempe of the foresaid obligacion of £500. And if the said John my sone refuse
then my extours shall have all my purchased lands and tenements in Middelton,
Iwade, Bobbinge, Newenton, Hartlepe, Halgestowe and ?purchase and all other my
landes and tenements, that is my maner callyd Lessecourte, Godfrayes and
Gustmers and lands in Sheldwich, Sellynge and Badlessemere and Upper and
Nether Howletts, my manor of Ripple and lands in Holyngborn, Thorneham,
Barstede, Huckynge and Detling during the life of the said Dame Jane therwith
to accomplishe all and singular covenent promises, etc. in the said obligacon.
I will my extours purchase landes and tenements in the hundreds
of Faversham and Middelton to the yerely value of £6.13.4. and they shall
gyve the same unto Wm Fynynx gent and Fridiswith my doughter his
wife and to theires of theire bodies and for lacke of suche yssue to remayne
unto the said John Norton my sone and his heires. Provided that the same gyft
of lands to the said Wm and Fridiswith that all suche promisses
etc. concludyd betwyne Sir John Fynynx and me for maryage of the same Wm
and Fridiswith contayned in a certeyne paper therof made and subscribed for
the joynter and dower of the said Frydiswith to be trulye performed, done and
fulfilled on the parte of the said Sir John Fynynx or suffycyent suertie for
the true performan therof unto my said extours be made. If the said promisses
by the said Sir John Fynynxd be not made then my extours shall gyve the said
lands to John Norton my sone to his heires. I will Thos Wrek my
servunt have all my interest in a lytle medowe in Halgestowe lyinge next to
his house.
My son John when 21 to kepe my obyte in the parishe churche of
Middelton and to expend 26/8. I will Dame Jane my wyfe have my tente at
cherche gate in Faversham to her from thende of one moneth after my decease
durynge her lyfe she dwellynge in the same and ?keping repacons and payinge
the rents therof, the remaynder theof unto John Norton my sone. I will my
feoffees in my two mesuages callyd the George and Clements in the parishe of
Newneton do grante unto Ambrose May my servunt one yerely annuitie of 26/8
durynge his lyfe. I will that Thomas Manyngtre my servunt have durynge his
life my mesuage at Sheldwich lease whiche I late purchassed of Robert Mason.
