1 Oct 1581. Richard Knatchbull of Mersam (Mersham)
in Kente. To be buried by the discrecion of my executoure. Whereas I stande
bounde to Norton Greene and Robert Grimes my brothers in lawe to leave Susane
my wiffe, sister to the saide Norton and Robert £300, I will myne extoure doe
ymmediately after my decease paye unto the saide Susane my wife £300. To the
saide Susane all her jewells and all her apparell of her bodye, and £100 upon
condicion that shee becomme bounde by obligacon unto my extoure in the somme
of £200 that if she shall not dymyse selle or lett my principall messuage in
whiche I nowe dwell and suche lande belongynge allready assured unto her for
parte of her ?ioincture nor annye parte thereof to anye other then to my sonne
Richarde that then the saide obligan to be voide or else to remayne in hir
force.
To Ursula my daughter £400 at her marriage or age of 20. To Mary
my daughter £400 at her marriage or age of 20. If anye die then £200 of the
£400 to the survirvowe and the other £200 to myne executoure and if both die
then the £800 to my extor. I geve yearlye unto my said daughters Ursula and
Mary for their fundinge and bringinge upp untill thage of 14 everie of theme
20 markes and after 14 untill 20 or be married £20 the said paymentes to be
made quarterlie.
I will my exor shall have myne intereste and terme of yeres yet
to comme of and in those landes and marshes freshe and salte whiche sometyme
were parcell of the demeasnes of the mannor of Chayne Courte whereof the
Revercion is by suffyciente conveyance assured unto John Knatchbull my sonne
by the graunte of Wm Burde, Richd Carnell, Richd
Springham and Thos Alderseye untill suche tyme as my son John shall
accomplisshe his age of 21 yeares and of the proffittes £30 yearlie to the
said John and retaine in his handes £300 of the proffits and of the residue
make accompte unto my sonne John when 21 I geve unto myn extoure myne
intereste and terme of yeares yet to comme of and in one percell of marche
lande called the reche and the Sheepelock close contaynyng 40 acres certaine
mershe landes called the Fowrscore acres (80 acres) beinge sometyme one mershe
and now devided into 4 several mershes, one mershe called the Underlaynes (24
acres) The Rowe mershe (40 acres) and also two other percells called Moyles
Landes (64 acres) the Revercion of all assured to my saide sonne John.
I geve unto Norton Knatchbull my sonne myne interest and terme of yeres yet to
comme of and in those freshe marshes lyinge within the Landes of Chayne Courte
in the parishes of Ivechurche and Midleye wherof the reversion is to Anthony
Mayne esquier.
Residue of all my goods, monneye, plate and other moveable goods
to Richarde Knatchbull my sonne whome I ordeyne sole executoure.
This is: touching all my landes and tenements in Kente or else
wheare. I geve unto Richarde Knatchbull my sonne after the deceasse of Susan
my wieff my principall messuage in whiche I nowe dwell and all those landes in
Mersam whiche I hadd of the gifte of John Knatchbull my Father by his last
Will And also fowretene acres of lande in Smythe (Smeeth) and Braborne which I
purchased of Richd Leech, all which premisses are assured to Suzan
my wieff for her joincture.
Also I geve unto Richarde Knatchbull my sonne one messuage and 16
acres of land to the sayde messuage adjoiynye lyinge in the parrisshe of
Mersam whiche I late purchased of Wm Curtes of Tenterden and also 3
acres of lande in Mersam I purchased of Thos Smythe of Smethe
lyinge amonge the lands which I bought of Wm Curtes aforesaide.
I geve unto my sonne Richarde one messuage and 2 acres I bought
of Pledger. Also one messuage and 60 acres in the parrisshes of Mersham,
Braborne and Smethe whiche I purchased of Wm Chalcrofte and allsoe
15 acres in Braborne and Mersam I purchased of George Bacheler. Also 7 acres
in Mersham and Smeth lyinge neere Quarington whiche I boughte of the said Wm
Curteis. Also 23 acres of Woodlande I purchased of Humfreye Clerk
genetlemanne in the parisshe of Franknersherste or Alingtoun or else where. To
have and to houlde unto the saide Richard Knatchbull, his heires and assignes
for ever. And if he dye withoute heire male of his bodye lawfullye begotten
before he shall accomplishe thage of 30 yeares Then I geve all the saide
premisses unto John Knatchbull my sonne. And if he dye withoute heire male
then unto Norton Knatchbull my sonne and his heires. And if he die withoute
heire male before thage of 30 yeares then unto Thomas Knatchbull my sonne and
if he die withoute heire male before 30 then unto George Knatchbull my sonne
and if he die without heires male before 30 then unto the next heire male of
me the saide Richarde Knatchbull and for defaulte to the righte heires of mee
Richarde Knatchbull.
Unto Thos Knatchbull my sonne one messuage and 43
acres in Mersham in thoccupacion of Henrye Watts and my landes called Fryth
Layes lyinge in the parishes of Mersham and Aldington whiche I purchased of my
brother John Knatchbull and if yt happen my saide sonne Thos to die
withowte heire male before 30 then to George Knatchbull my sonne and for
defaulte to Norton Knatchbull my sonne and the heires males of his bodye and
for defaute to Richd Knatchbull my sonne and for defaulte to John
Knatchbull my sonne and for defaulte to the righte heires of me Richarde
Knatchbull.
I will my exor shall have the lettinge and takinge of the
proffitts of the saide landes untill my sonne Thomas shall accomplish the age
of 21 yeres and of the profitts shall make allowaunce unto my sonne Thos
for his findinge and bringinge opp and of the residue of the proffitts shall
make a inste accompte and paymente unto my
sonne Thos when 21.
Unto George Knatchbull my sonne and his heires one messuage and
53 acres comonlie called Gridle lyinge in the parishes of Mresham and
Aldington and also 48 acres of Upp land and marshe I purchased of Humfrey
Clark Gentleman lyinge in the parishes of Francknersherst, Allington and
Bonnington. And if my sonne George doe dye withoute heir male before 30 I geve
the saide premisses unto Thomas my sonne and for defaulte to Norton my sonne
and for defaulte of issue to Richard Knatchbull my sonne and for defaulte to
John Knatchbull my sonne and for defaulte to the ryhte heires of me Richard
Knatchbull. Myne exor shall have the settinge, lettinge and receving of the
proffitts untill my sonne George shall accomplishe his age of 21 and [as
before].
Item: whereas I have already assured unto Norton Grine and Robert
Grine [i.e. Greene] esquires the parcells of land followinge hereafter
expressed that is to saye 52 acres of mershe in Newchurche late Symon Edolphes
to the use of me the saide Richard Knatchbull and Susan my wieffe for terme of
oure lyves for parcell of the joincture of my sayde wieff and after oure
deceasse to the use of the eldest issue male of oure bodies lawfullye begotten
and one messuage and sixe score acres of lande in Mersam, Barborne, Byrchole
and Smethe late Richarde Snatchbull and one messuage and 28 acres of
lande in Mersham, Braborne and Wye late Reynolde Knatchbull and 35 acres in
Mersham, Braborne and Birchole late Thos Hall and one messuage and
three score acres of mershe in Brensett, Ivechurche and Snave late Simon
Edolphe to the use of the saide Richarde Snatchbull for terme of my
life and after my decease to the use of the eldest issue male of the bodyes of
me the saide Richarde and Susann my wieff lawfullye begotton and also certeine
mershes called Rowemarshes otherwise Moyles land late purchased of Rowlande
Clark Knighte lyinge in the parishes of Ivechurche and Midleye and one waye
leadinge to the same lande to the use of me the saide Rycharde Knatchbull for
terme of my lieff. And after my decease to use of Norton Snatchbull my
sonne and of the heires males of his bodye lawfully begotten withe dyvers
remaynders over. Also I geve unto North Snatchbull my sonne three acres
of lande lyinge within Moyles lande whiche I bought of John Englett of
Brocklande. I the saide Richard Knatchbull in further corroboratinge and
strengthinninge of the saide Assuraunce doe geve all the saide messuages
landes and marshes withe their apapurtences to the saide Norton as before
assured and to the heires males of his bodye lawfullye begotten and for
default of suche issue to Thos my sonne and for defaulte to George
Knatchbull my sonne. Item: I geve unto Norton Knatchbull my sonne and to his
heires twoe tenements and twoe acres of lande in the parrishese of Brensyt and
fortie acres of woodd and lande in the parishe of Ruckinge which I purchased
of Symon Edolphe.
