1522. Laste daye of June. John Potter of Westram (Westerham) in the dioc. of Rochester beinge of hole mynde and memorye and in parfyt feythe of holy churche. To be buryed in Saint Katheryn chauncell next unto the grave of my father and for my lyinge there I gyve unto the churche of Westram iiij torchys price of 26/8.
   I will myn extors within haulfe yere after my dethe by a stone uppon my grave wrytten upon it Domine Miserere. I will myn extours pay the vicar of Westram all my tythes and my fathers tythes and bequests accordinge to a byll lynge in my stody wrytten with myne owne honde. I will myn extours within a monyth after my dethe do delyver to every monke professed within the monastery of Saint Petur of Westram xijd, to my lorde Abbot there 6/8. to maister Priour there 3/4, to masiter tresorer there 3/4, desyringe then to forgeve me in all that I have not doon my dutye and dyligent servuce to them accordinge to my fee.
   To myne eldest sonne that shall fortune to inheryt my land accordinge to my last will halfe my beddinge and haulf of my householde stuff at the age of xxj yeres.
   I will Martha my wiff have the other haulfe of my householde stuff.
   To every housholder being a day labourour dwellinge within the parishe and Towne of Westram usynge no handy crafte 12d. To the mending of the high way betwene the nether ende of Botley hill and bitnalbroke 40s and of the high way betwene Cocombe hyll and Edenbrigge (Edenbridge) other 40s and of the high waye betwene Grenet and Brokesham parke other 40s.
   My extours my sonne William Myddlton and my cosyn John Hodsolle.
   To my doughter Elisabeth Middleton tenne mother sheepe callyd ewys and iij of my best keyne.
[Then follows about the Antem at Westminster, see St Pauls Eccl. Soc. proceedings].
   Item: I gyve unto Martha and Anne, doughters of my said sonne Wylliam Middleton V marke at their marige. If they both deceas before I will that Elizabeth and Agnes their sustres have the said tenne markes.
Unto Edmond my sonne £20 at suche tyme as his maister shall thinke moste for his proffit.
   I will that Johane Godfrey my servunt have unto hir mariage xls. Unto John Waston my godsoone the sonne of John Waston of Chepestede (Chipstead) gentilman 40s.
   This is: of all my landes etc. Furst I will Martha my wif have all my landes and tentements within the parishes of Edonbrige and Lyngfelde for terme of her lyf only, also a convennt rome within this my dwellinge house at Welstrete with easement of the kytchen there and other necessaryes. If she fortune to marye or deceas before Thomas my eldest son inheryt my landes come to the age of 21 than I will myn extours take thissues and for thexhibicion and kepynge of all my childern
   I will my feoffes now beyng a lyve as it apperith by severall dedis of purchase made as well by me as by my father playnly apperyth that they suffer the forsaid Martha to take thissues etc. of the said londes etc. assigned duringe her lif and also suffer Thomas my son or that other of my sonnes the which shall happyn to inheryt my said londes when he comythe to thage of 21 yeres to take thissues of all my other landis that is my landes in the parishis of Westram, Brastede and Oxstede and the reversion of my landes etc. in Edonbrige and Lyngfelde (Lingfield). To him and to theldist heire male and for lacke to remayne to Richarde my sonne and eldist heire male and for lacke to Wylliam my sonne and so from theldist heire male to the next eldist heire male and for defaulte of such issue to remayn to Elizabethe Myddleton my doughter and of all theires females of the bodyes of all my iij sonnes to be devided amongs them so that they amongs them provid an honest lyvinge for Edmonde my sonne and for his childerne if eny be alyve and for lacke of suche yssue to remayne to my sonne Myddleton and his heires for ever.
   I will that Richarde my sonne have all my landes and tenements in the parrishe of Wrotham and the reversion of all those landes there the whiche I late purchased of Wyllyam Nysell and all my londes etc. in te paryshe of Walderne in Sussex I late purchased of Richd More and Kateryne his wif, doughter and heire of James Tanner and all my landes etc. in the paroche off Pensherst (Penshurst) to hym and theldest heire male and for lacke to remayn to Thomas his brother and for lacke to Wylliam my sonne as is above wrytton.
   In my other landes I hartely require and desyre my godde lorde of Richeford to helpe my sonne Richarde to the feasable possesicion of the forsaid landes in Walderne and myne extous shal delyver suche somes of mony to his lordeship as he shall awarde to eny personnes by his good advisement.
   I will Wylliam my sonne have all my landis etc. in the parochis of Senocke (Sevenoaks) and Lye (Leigh) to him and to theldest heire male and for lacke to remayne to Thomas his brother and for lacke to Richarde my sone. Wit. Martha Potter, Richarde Potter, Edmond Plomley, Elizabeth Middleton.
