I William Calowe servaunt to the lawe 5 Oct
1485 (I H VII). To be buried in the White Freres at London my sepulture
to be made on the south side of the said chirch betwene the ij awters as
Sr John Aissley is oon the north side. If I dye in London and
the Prior and Convent will so be intreted about the which I will that
ther be spent £20 that is to witt x marc to the Prior and Convent for
ther interest and good will labor and solempne obseques with messe and
dirige and x mark aboute the makyng of the said tombe and x marc in the
costs upponthe day of my sepultir and if this suffise not theme I will
that ther be spent and takyng other xxli marc or in dedis of
almes.
[Directions as to ceremony at his buriall and dyner to good
neighbours etc]. £12 to the help of my scolers of divinite of the saide
White Freers all them to procede in the Univsite of Cambrigge by the
space of iij yeres as Thirlowe and the yonge faire frere and Arnold and
he contynue in vertue to be one of them.
And as for my plate that is to witte a pair basins of
silver I wil that they be to be polisshed and myne armes to be sette in
them, if he that was owener of them wilnot geve redely again his money
for them and thenne to be yevin to the parissh chirch of the holy crosse
in Caunterbury atte Westgate ther to abide as a memory for my soul. And
as for the potte and ewer of silver thoo to be at the dispocion of my
excutours withoute that the owner will within a quarter or half a yer at
the firthest pay the money for them as it apperith in a bill and if he
paie it so agein then I will with that silver a pair of new basins of
silver party gilt as they been be bought of newe and myne armes to be
sette in them and thoo to be deliverd to the Vicar of Gardeynes of the
said parish chirch for theintent aforesaid.
Also a standing pece curid gilt the which was leyed in
plegge to me for vli and a flat serchers of silver otherwise
called Preketts the which leid in plegge by a nother for vj marc.
Also a salt lying in my deske uppon my countre with cover
withoute a knopp the which was leied for 20s by a nother. And
I had half a dosn of silver spones and a pair of smale corall bedys in
plegge for 20s of the Grocer beside the Gate the which were
better thenne vl money [other pledges].
Residue of my plate and other yewels except a grete maser
and a standing notte a salt of Graunts I will that my brother Hert have
theym to dispose among his childern whenne they comyn to mariage so that
William Hert have the best cuppe, Margaret Hert my goddought the next
and an hart of gold and also the demysene harneysed with silver and gilt
lying in a cofur, my breganderis curid with welvett with a standard of
mayle and gussetts lying at the armerers besidis the chirch my brother
William Hert to have them and ij paire of briganders I will John Hert
and William his brother to have them and thother ij paire breganders
being in the possession of Edmonde Coksegge with all my bedding and stuf
of my chambr be devided bytwene my ij clerks and ij shetis to Alice
Cook.
The standing salt of grauntes when he paieth xvj marc ?hill
to be delivyed agein unto him. And Rent and ferme being behinde in
substans is for this ij yeres of Shafford Court and Shafford Mille and
of alle myn other landes and tenements in the hundred of Westgate in
Kent the which is more thanne £30 and £10 of Sr Thomas
Delamare to be paied at halow masse and £20 of Wm Hert.
I will as they may be gaderid that £10 be gevn to the
Prior and Covent of Bokinham Abbey in Norfolk and £10 to the parish
chirch of Revestrale in the same counte where as I was born and unto the
prioresse and Covent of Clerkinwell where as my wif oon whoose soule god
have mercy is buried toward ye help of the newe werk in ther cloyster
ther £20 and the overplus by myn exors as at the priore of Seint
Gregories of Caunterbury in espiall.
And as for my plate and stuf at Caunterbury and books and
other loosendis and goodes of myn being in my study at London, except a
booke of Assisez in papir, a Dratton, a booke of newe statuts and ij
books of a Briggeonents oon of myn owen labor and thother of
Lincolnesinn labor be atte the disposion of myne executours my clerks
and other my frendes suche as entende to encrese theim self in the lawe.
Extours William Hert gentilman the elder, Sr Thos
Pedeook prest the vicar of the parish chirch of the Holy Crosse besides
Westgate in Caunterbury and Edmond Coksegge my clerk.
Witnesse herof Maister Thos Englissh, Sir John
Smyth parish prest of Clerkenwell, Alexandre Graunt, Herry Deyne groser
and Wm Kyrkely.
Last will of me William Calowe servaunt to the lawe
otherwise callid Wm Collowe 26 April 1483 for all thise
londes maner and mille lying besidis Caunterburye withoute the Westgate
in Kent the which londes maner and mille sum tyme was Bartelotts the
which was callid Shafford Court and the mille callid Shafford mille.
First I will that if oon Thos Seymer will have all the said
londes, maner and mille to him and to his heires in fee for the somme of
vC marc to be paied in v yer, except ij closis and a medue of the which
oon cloose is callid Pynkeham Cloos and a nother is callid Clopham cloos
and the medue is callid Thretyne meede the which ij closez and mede I
woll. Edmond my servaunt shall have for term of his lief and after to
remayne to the said Thos Seymer. And the money comyng among
poor people marige of poore maidenes of the parish of Seint Dunstones in
the West saving x marc to Alcie Bekett other wise callid Alice Barly if
she keper hir maydene tille she marye and xls to Alice
London.
I will xlli therof be distributed in makyng of
high wayes nygh adjoinyng aboute Caunterburye. And also I will that John
Hert theldest sonne of Wm Hert if that he kepe suche purpose
of lyvyng as he was at this day proposid have xx marc to pray for my
soule.
And my godought Margaret Hert xx marc for to marye hir ther
with. If the said Thos Seymer be not of poore for to purchase
the said londes then I will that the Priour of Seint Gregories in
Caunterburye shalhave hit for the soonme of CCCC marc uppon condicon
that they shall founde a perpetuall memorie for to pray for my soule
etc. And if the seid Prior cannot morteize and founde the said livelode
then to be sold to Wm Hert my brother in lawe for 400 marc
and after his discease to remayne to Wm his sonne.
All my landes and tenements on Gillyngham in Kent to be
sold to the performacion of my will.
Probate 4 Feb 1487 by oaths of Dni Johis Smyth capellan
Elizabeth Halyday and John Kyrkby and com to Wmo Hert gent
and Edward Coggesegge exors.
