This Church has not one Inscription in it. Neither is
there, here, any Thing at all remarkable, but, that, The Communion Table stands
in the Middle of the Chancel; wch. I have also seen in some other Churches. It
consists only of the Chancell and Body – and has no Steeple; but, 1 small Bell
hangs at ye West End, in ye Inside; it has no Inscription.
Mr KILBURNE tells us, p.265, that, "by an Earthquake happening 6 Apr. 1580,
a Piece of this Parish Church fell down". It is quite uncertain to whom
this Church was dedicated.
It is a Curacy.
1. The *Present Curate is Mr Thos. PENNINGTON.
The Arches over ye Doors are round, and embellish’d after ye Saxon Manner.
2. In the Church Yard are Memorials of DILNOT, GARNETT, MAY & STRINGER.
3. On Sutton Downe, are 7 or 8 Tumuli Sepulchrales of ye Ancients.
