Monumental Inscriptions of Christ
Church, Snodland Noted by
Andrew Ashbee & Keith Holdstock 1980's & 2004.
When you have finished
looking at the following listing, be sure to visit the website of the Snodland
The parish of what was then Lower
Birling comprised those parts of Snodland to the south of the boundary
stream (now under Rocfort Road), taking in Bramley Road, parts of
Malling and Birling Roads and parts of Birling parish (including Ham
Hill) which were nearer Snodland than Birling village. The burial
ground, first consecrated on 10 October 1893, is all to the east of the
church, including an addition incorporated on 6 November 1899. The first
burial was on 29 November 1894.
An altercation many years ago between a churchwarden and the vicar is
said to have resulted in the destruction of records showing the position
of those early graves which had no memorials. However, for many of the
more recent burials, the site has been recorded in the registers. During
the early 1980s the writer and Mr. Keith Holdstock undertook a
systematic survey to ascertain from all available evidence as much as
could be learned about the placement of the graves. Names and some dates
were recorded then, but not full transcriptions of the stones. Although
the alignment on the ground is not always exact, Mr Holdstock drew up a
table which is the basis for this booklet. He plotted rows from 1-22
[now 23] beginning at the east (lowest) end and assigned letters A,B,C,
etc., to the graves in each row, with A nearest the path and spreading
north and south. This will be a sufficient guide for anyone tracing a
grave. It is not an easy site to maintain, although periodic attempts
are made to clear the lower section, which quickly becomes overgrown.
Soil movement at the east end because of the slope and the activities of
animals has added to the problem. A row of shrubs formerly dividing
upper and lower parts of the churchyard was removed some years ago, but
the space has not been used for burials. The present survey was
completed in May 2004. Many of the memorials have become virtually
illegible in whole or part since the 1980s and some evidence recorded
then has disappeared entirely. As usual the memorials include some names
of persons not buried in this churchyard; some were cremated.
In this survey: (1) entries within square brackets [ ] have no visible
memorial and information has been gleaned from the burial register,
including the position code written there, also shown within [ ]. (2)
entries in italics include information gleaned during the 1980s survey,
but which is now illegible (maybe only in part), buried, or lost.
