Back to Churchyards listed

Kindly typed up for the website by Pat Tritton

The following Monumental Inscriptions are taken from a book published in 1895 by Charles Cotton, entitled  History & Antiquities of the Church and Parish of St Laurence (Lawrence), Thanet (Ramsgate).

Page 129   "The Inscriptions on the Tombstones, down to 1800, have been taken off in the following order:— Firstly, those immediately around the Church beginning at the east end, passing round to the south, the west, and the north, all within the path; then those outside the path, beginning at the triangular piece upon the south and passing to the west and straight down towards the east to the Abbott Mausoleum thus completing those contained in the original Churchyard; secondly, the Inscriptions are taken from those within the first addition to the original Churchyard (upon the north of the old Churchyard), they begin at the east, and are given as far as possible row by row, up to the west end of this part of the ground. The other portions of the new Churchyard were added subsequently to 1800, therefore the inscriptions to be found there—and they are very numerous—are not given in this work.
For the sake of reference every stone has a distinct number, which will be found to contain its own group of inscriptions.
Cozens in his "Tour Through the Isle of Thanet, etc," gives the Inscriptions of nine monuments in this Churchyard, all of which are included (with additions) except three; these I cannot now find, so they are added at the end of this Chapter and are marked as being extracted from that work."

Page 152   "The . . .   transcripts were copied from the tombstones for this work by Mr. John B. Gibbs, of St. Laurence, and as might be expected, the task was beset with difficulties on account of the great age of many of the inscriptions, and the effects of long standing neglect and bad weather. All the inscriptions down to the year 1812 have been searched for, and except those marked with an * have been compared with the names and dates in the Burial Registers, and verified there from by Mr. Kenyon W. Wilkie, whose additions from the Registers have been printed in italics and placed within brackets. Those marked with an * have not been identified in the Registers, failure being due either to the illegibility of the inscriptions on the stones, or omission of the clerk to enter the particulars in the Registers. The greatest praise is due to Mr. Wilkie for the care and. accuracy with which this most laborious work has been completed, which it is hoped, will be of some value to future genealogists and Pedigree hunters."

The Mural Monuments and tablets within the Church

Death levels man – the wicked and the just,
The wise, the weak, lie blended in the dust;
And by the honours dealt to every name,
The King of Terrors seems to level fame – George Crabbe

Chapter III

"There are now sixty seven tablets and mural monuments upon the walls within the church, of which the sixteen only then existing, were described by Cozen in his "Tour through the Isle of Thanet" in 1793; he also mentions two tablets which I have been unable to discover, and which I have included at the end of this chapter, for the sake of preserving their inscriptions. The coats of arms, where emblazoned, have been carefully described, and compared where possible with the arms now borne by the descendants of those commemorated.

The inscriptions are literal transcriptions, almost line by line, of the originals; and from the care bestowed upon them will be found to be perfectly accurate in every particular, and in every case have been brought down to date."

The inscriptions upon the ledger stones within the Church
I gladly trust My bodie to this school, that it may learn to spell his elements, and finde his birth written in dustie heraldrie and lines; Which dissolution sure doth best discern, comparing dust with dust, and earth with earth. – George Herbert

Chapter IV - Leger stones
"The inscriptions upon the Leger Stones have been transcribed with great care, and where they have been covered by pews or benches, with the kind permission of the Vicar and Churchwardens, these have been raised, so that a faithful copy of each has been obtained and is here recorded. During the restoration of the Tower in 1888, it was necessary to open, and subsequently to fill in, many of the vaults around the piers; the ground in which the foundations were laid, being almost honeycombed, and the foundations themselves even cut away to make room for burials. All the human remains and coffins found in these vaults were carefully removed, and placed in a large vault in the middle of the North Aisle, formerly containing the remains of the EARL OF DUNMORE, but empty since their removal to the D’ESTE Mausoleum in the churchyard."

Vaults
396. In a vault near the south west angle of the south west pier were found three leaden coffins, their name plates being inscribed, Mary BRACE, Ann WILLIAMS, 1834, and Major James Brace, 1836, respectively. In a vault at the south of this pier, was a leaden coffin with no name upon it, and immediately to the east of this another vault, which was empty.

397. To the east of this pier were three vaults under the south Tower arch, the southernmost containing one leaden coffin with no name upon it; the middle vault containing the wooden coffin of Mary ELFORD dated 1797; and the northern vault containing the leaden coffin of George LOUCH, and the wooden coffin of Ann Louch. Under the centre of the Tower was a vault containing the leaden coffin of the Rev. Peter JAMES.

398. Under the north Tower arch a vault, containing the three leaden coffins of Mary BOWLING, Nathaniel GOTT, and Grace Bowling respectively (no dates).

399. In the North Aisle towards the north west angle of the north west pier, a vault containing a wooden coffin with no name upon it; and to the north of the same pier, another vault containing a coffin of lead, and underneath another of wood with no name upon either. Curiously enough the wooden coffin was quite empty, the coffin had been buried without the body!

400. In a vault under the South Transept Window, the leaden coffin of Mary LUCAS, dated 1830; and in a vault at the south west angle of the south east pier a wooden coffin with no name upon it.

401. In a vault at the north east angle of the north east pier were several ancient remains, but they were all decayed; and under the North Transept Window a vault containing the leaden coffin of Mary COX.

402. At the north east angle of the north west pier and interred in an angular direction north east and south west, about eighteen inches under the level of the floor, we found the skeleton of a man between 6 and 7 feet in height; who he was and why buried in this manner will probably ever remain a mystery: but it may have been the remains of Mr Adam SPRACKLING who was buried on Thursday the 28th of April 1653 in St Laurence Church, see "The Bloody Husband" under ELLINGTON, "where in the night he was buried neer his wife", and as there is no entry in the Burial Register of this Mr Adam Sprackling’s funeral, although that of his wife is duly recorded – "The wife of Adam Sprackling, gen., buryed the fifteen day of Desember, 1652 (Burial Register) – it seems probable that it was he who was thus hastily interred, especially as the burial was in the passage way.

The other vaults in the Church were not disturbed.

The following Legers I have been unable to find, being either covered by seats, or through lapse of time the inscriptions have become totally worn away and lost, and the situation of the graves forgotten; they are however given amongst the few recorded in Cozens’s "Tour Through the Isle of Thanet", pub. 1793, and so have been included in this work.

466 [64]. On a plain gravestone: "Hic jacet Robertus SPRAKELING, armiger, filius natu Maximum Adami Sprakeling, equities aurati. Reliquit duos filios, Adamum et Robertum; et tres filias, Mariam, Margaretam, et Margeriam. Obit die II November, aetatis suae 69. Salutis nostrae 1646."

"In the above transcriptions all those words appearing in Italics are in the originals either worn away and obliterated, or covered by some structure within the Church, which we were unable to remove. In order however, that the utility of these complications to the Genealogist may be as complete as possible, the lacunae have been supplied by reference to the Burial Register, for the purpose of extracting the correct dates (as also for the verification of those doubtful); whilst other parts have been sought for in the works of various authors, though this search has not been successful in every case."

CHAPTER V.  -  Brasses
"The Brasses now remaining in the Church are unfortunately few, from the fact that many have been ruthlessly torn from their matrices and are now lost; one at least is probably still existing, but if so is covered by a pew, perhaps one day to be rediscovered, as it has not been heard of since 1802; two have lately been restored by the generosity of a recent purchaser, but many I am afraid we shall never see again. I propose to mention all those known to have existed in the Church, as well as to describe those now remaining, and of these last, the two Plates of Brasses, which are reproductions of Photographs of rubbings made by myself, contain all the most ancient."

474. Roger MANSTON and Julian his wife. What is probably the oldest record of an inscription upon a brass in this Church is to be found in WEEVER’s "Funeral Monuments," London, 1631, page 267, where he states that in his time when he made his survey there was a Leger Stone with the following inscription upon it (but now quite lost): "Roger Manston & Julian sa femme gisoinct ici Dieu des almes ent mercy. Amen." This inscription in Norman French would be of about the fourteenth century, and might be translated thus: "Roger Manston and Julian his wife lie here, upon whose souls God have mercy. Amen."
Their daughter married John SEPTVANS, of Milton, near Sittingbourne, whose son, also called John, married Constance ST. NICHOLAS. (See page 63).

475. A female member of the family of ST. NICHOLAS, unknown. LEWIS in the "History of Tenet", 2nd edition, page 108, of the Collections, at the foot of the page, gives a cut of a shield in brass, bearing the arms of the family of St Nicholas, and states that "Just by on a flat stone (is) an effigies of a woman in brass, and an inscription underneath, both now gone, but under them is this coat of arms yet remaining."
The Blazon given is Ermine, a chief quarterly, or and gules, and I have identified the Leger Stone, as being the one under the Tower at its western part, where it was placed when it was removed from the north east Chancel. The Leger Stone presents the indents of an effigy of a woman in brass and an inscription underneath, and below is the indent for the shield of brass, which since Lewis’s time has also disappeared. This Leger Stone marked the last resting place of a female member of the family of St. Nicholas, who died during their occupation of Nether Court, which was from before 1375 to about the year 1500, but the particular individual to whom the stone relates is unknown.

476. Nicholas MANSTON. The next Brass which demands our attention is that of Nicholas Manston, it is figured upon the first Plate of Brasses, p.96, as he appears upon his tomb with the indents of his shields of arms above. This Leger Stone is now to be seen upright against the north wall of the Manston Chapel, close to the screen, and is viewed in the very beautiful illustration showing the screen opposite page 37. This Brass is the best one in the Church, and exhibits the Armiger or Esquire in full armour, belted and spurred, at his feet his faithful hound, and round his neck the collar of S.S., the Badge of the Guild or Order of the Holy Spirit, to which he, as a military member of the church militant belonged. Notice his sword and short dagger, both sheathed, for his hands assume an attitude of prayer. This collar of S.S. has given rise to a vast amount of speculation; it has become a kind of antiquarian puzzle, as to what it means, why it is worn by certain persons, who introduced it, and why its use has been so very limited. It would be beyond the limit of this volume to go into these side issues, but we may briefly state our own conviction that the design really means the letters S.S., and stands for the words Sanctus Spiritus. That it was adopted by JOHN OF GAUNT, Duke of Lancaster, there can be no doubt, he taking over the letter S, the badge of Lancaster, as well as the office of "Senechallus" or Steward, in right of his wife who was the daughter of HENRY OF LANCASTER. This collar of S.S. was introduced about the time of RICHARD II, and both he and John of Gaunt wore it, HENRY IV also wore it, as well as Dukes and other noblemen, Knights, and Esquires, but these probably were all of the King’s household or retinue, or Esquires of the Body to the sovereign. Sir H. SPELLMAN in his Glossa. lit. Armor. describes five distinct kinds of Esquires, in which the "fourth rank are reckoned those, unto whom the king himself, together with a title, giveth arms, or createth Esquires, by putting about their neck a silver collar of S.S. (Esses), and in former times, upon their heels, a pair of white spurres silvered: whereupon at this day in west parts of the kingdom, they be called white spurres, for distinction from Knights, who are wont to wear gilt spurres: and to the first begotten sonnes only of these doth the title belong". The collar remained in use during the reigns of HENRY V, HENRY VI, HENRY VII, and to a very limited extent during HENRY VIII, down to EDWARD VI and ELIZABETH, when the use of it was restricted to certain Judges of the Courts. It only remains to be said that the pendant by which the collar is brooched, varies somewhat in different reigns, in the example before us of Nicholas MANSTON it is a jewelled ring. For a very full and comprehensive account of this collar, reference may be made to the article on "Hackington, Canterbury, and the Collar of S.S." by Mr Edward FOSS, F.S.A., in the "Arch.Cant" vol. I, p.73, to which I am indebted for much historical information with regard to this matter.
To return to the Brass before us, it will be seen that the Shields of Arms at the upper corners of the Leger Stone are missing, only the indents remain, but HASTED has recorded them as, Quarterly, 1st and 4th. A fess ermine between three mullets; 2nd and 3rd on a cross engrailed a cinqfoil. And the inscription is as follows:
"Hic jacet Nicholaus MANSTON armig’ qui’ obiit vio die Augusti Anno Dni, mccccxliiiio cujus anime propicietur Deus. Amen." Which may be translated thus: "Here lies Nicholas Manston, Esquire, who died the 6th day of August 1444, upon whose soul God be gracious. Amen."

477. Eleanor MANSTON, née HAUTE. In the middle of this Chancel upon the ground will be seen a Leger Stone, with the Brass torn out of its centre, but it now has five of its six Shields of Arms upon Brasses on either side; this marks the spot where the wife of the above described Nicholas Manston rests, his remains probably still lie next but nearer the north wall of the Church, though his Leger Stone has been displaced. It is recorded that this lady was Eleanor, only daughter of Edmund Haute, Esquire, of Petham and Bourn, and was married to Nicholas Manston, Armiger, of Manston Court. The exact date of her death is unknown, but it must have been before the death of her husband (1444) as the lowest shield on the sinister side of her Leger Stone, bears the Arms of their daughter and heir, with the Manston Quarter labelled, showing that the father of the bearer was still alive.
The indent shows that the lady was dressed in a costume of the period (middle of the fifteenth century) and that she wore a mantle, and what was known as a mitre-shaped head-dress. The brass Shields of Arms which surround the indent of the figure upon the Leger Stone are shown in the opposite Plate, with the Shields placed in their proper positions, and exhibiting the following bearings:
(1). The Brass in the uppermost indent on the dexter side is lost, but probably bore the Manston Arms.
(2). The uppermost Shield upon the sinister side denotes the Arms of Haute, viz: Or,* a cross engrailed gules. [*Hasted says sable, but he is clearly wrong, vide Shields No. 4, 5, and 6].
(3). The dexter middle Shield is the same, but bears a "rose" in the fess point as a cadance mark.
(4). The sinister middle Shield contains the Arms of MANSTON and HAUTE, as baron and femme, viz: Party per pale, gules, a fess ermine, between three mullets argent, for Manston. Upon the sinister side Or, a cross engrailed gules, for Haute.
(5). The dexter bottom Shield contains the Arms of Manston, impaling FREEMAN (?), the latter being: Gules, three lozenges or, two and one. This last Shield had been missing for over one hundred years, but coming into the hands of Mr HILLS, of King Street, he at once restored it (with another) to the Church, where it has been replaced in its ancient matrix.
(6). The sinister bottom Shield bears the Arms of Manston’s issue quartering Haute; the Manston quartering being labelled with a File of three points, to denote the heir, the father still alive.

478. John PAWLN and Margery his wife, 1462. The next Brass in chronological order, that we have to deal with, has not been seen since the year 1802, when a communication appeared in the November number of that year of "The Gentleman’s Magazine", to the following effect: "The removal of a pew in the Church of St Laurence has brought to light a small brass plate for John Pawlyn and Margery his wife, 1462; which, from its situation, had escaped the notice of Mr LEWIS in his ‘History of the Isle of Thanet’"; then follows the inscription which is more than usually abbreviated, but as this is not a facsimile we will give it entire: "His jacet Johannes Pawlyn et Margeria uxor ei qui quidem Johannes obiit in festo Sancti Hillarii Anno domini Millio: cccclxii quorum animabus propiciet deus. Amen." Which may be translated thus: "Here lies John Pawlyn and Margery his wife, of whom the said John died on the Festival of St Hillary (13th January) in the yeare of our Lord 1462, upon whose souls God be gracious. Amen."
If this inscription has been correctly transcribed, it will be noticed that a small d is used for Domini and Deus, which is very unusual. The name of PAWLYN (formerly of Stone) was extinct here as a surname, in the beginning of the present century, but existed as a Christian name in connection with the families of SACKET, HUGGETT, and PEARCE; the names are kept up still upon the site of what was once the property of these families, e.g. upon the right hand side of Trinity Place, in Hereson Road, are two cottages, one called Huggett Villa and the other Paulin Villa 1440, inscribed upon them. There is also at the bottom of Broad Street, at the left hand side out of King Street, an inscribed stone in the old wall, with Huggett Lodge 1777 upon it. The Arms of Paulin, as given by Burke are as follows: Azure, on a bend between six lozenges or, each charged with an escallop sable, four escallops of the last.

479. Thomas ST. NICHOLAS and Joane MANSTON, 1499, and Thomas St. Nicholas their son. Of the next two Brasses we have records only, except a fragment, a female figure, numbered 1 upon the Plate of Brasses opposite page 101, and viewed in the illustration of the screen opposite page 37, where it is seen screwed upon the upper of the two northern panels; and here the thanks of all lovers of antiquity are due to the unknown person, who with pious forethought and Christian care, so prevented this most remarkable Brass from being lost. This Effigy of the lady, and the records of her husband in WEEVER, LEWIS, and those continued in the writings of other Historians, even down to the present day, have apparently caused much confusion and difficulty in the attempt to identify the individuals to whom they refer. It was probably in the north eastern or Manston Chapel that WEEVER in 1631, noted the following inscription, contained on page 267 of his "Funeral Monuments". "Here lieth Thomas St. Nicholas, who married Joane Manston …./ dyed …../ had issue Thomas St. Nicholas, here entombed."
Now this Thomas ST. NICHOLAS has apparently always been taken for Thomas St. Nicholas, of Thorne, who married Juliana, daughter of Nicholas and Eleanor MANSTON, but it should be noted that WEEVER and Peter LE NEVE, distinctly state that his wife was Joane and not Juliana Manston. (*Church Notes, 1603-1624. [Add.M.S.S. Brit. Mus. No. 5479]). Also LEWIS in his "History of Tenet" amongst the "Collections", gives a part of the inscription of another brass relating to this same Thomas St. Nicholas, who married Joane (here called Jehane) Manston. Part of the inscription was gone in his time, now it is all gone, but I have supplied, within brackets, the missing part as well as I can. "On a piece of Brass Plate, under the portraiture of a man and woman in brass, that of the man is gone". "(Hic jacket corpus Thom)e Sanen Nicholas, Armigeri & Jehane Consort sue que obiit xxo (Die mensis …./Anno D)omini millesimo cccclxxxxix quorum animab’ propicietur Deus. Amen." Which may be translated thus: "Here lies the body of Thomas St. Nicholas, Esquire, and Jehane, his wife, she (Jehane) died the twentieth day of the month of …./ in the year of our Lord, 1499. Upon whose souls may God be gracious. Amen."
Lewis says that above this inscription was the portraiture of a man and woman in brass but that the brass of the man had disappeared. I don’t think it will take much stretch of the imagination to identify the Brass of the Lady who adorns the screen, as the Brass that was left upon this Leger Stone in Lewis’s time, which stone and remnant of inscription have long since disappeared. Now my objection to these brasses having been those of Thomas St. Nicholas, of Thorne, and his wife Juliana (née) Manston are as follows: Thomas St. Nicholas, of Thorne, married Juliana, daughter of Nicholas and Eleanor Manston: he died in 1474 (see Pedigree) and gave minute directions in his Will that "his body should be buried before the image of St. Nicholas in the Chancel of the Chapel of Thorne, at Minster", that is the Chapel in the north Transept at St Mary’s Minster, and this image of St. Nicholas which formerly stood in the Thorne Chantry, at Minster, is still shown to the "tourist" visiting Minster, but is described there as the image of St. MILDRED, the foundress of the Church, which of course greatly enhances its value as a relic of that pious princess and adds a greater glory to that already glorious Church. But the experienced eye immediately detects in this fragment, the broad chin and shoulders of a man; and the cope, morse, alb, and the insulae or orphreys of the mitre of a Bishop of the Church of England, in the style of the early part of the fifteenth century, the date that the family of St. Nicholas were in possession of the estate of Thorne, near Minster, and what more probable, than that this image of the Bishop should be that of the Patron Saint of this family.
Now it is hardly likely that the testamentary wishes of this personage were not carried out, and we may be pretty certain that he was as he desired, buried in the Thorne Chantry; and that his wife Juliana who died in 1493, and whose Will was proved in that year, and in which she mentions her mother and grandfather, was also buried beside him.
But the inscription says that Jehane ST. NICHOLAS died in 1499, six years later, and her brass, which is seen to be the effigy of a lady in a butterfly head-dress, tight fitting gown trimmed with fur, and fur cuffs (for her fingers and nails are distinct), and her curious long belt, ending in embroidery and tasselled, is evidently that of quite the very end of the fifteenth century.
Now a glance at the Pedigree of the family of St. Nicholas, which I have very carefully corrected by the light thrown upon it by the research of the late J.R. PLANCHE, Esqr., will, I think, lead us to identity these inscriptions and this remnant of Brass, as belonging to the Leger Stones of Thomas St. Nicholas of Oare, near Faversham, and Joane, daughter of Roger MANSTON, who died in 1499, and their eldest son, another Thomas St. Nicholas and elder brother of Roger St. Nicholas, named after his maternal grandfather, as was the custom in those times.
This Thomas ST. NICHOLAS of Oare, would be second cousin to Elizabeth
St. Nicholas, of Nether Court and Manston Court; her brother and all her near relations being dead, and being a minor, the duties of guardian naturally fell upon this cousin of Oare, who brought his family with him to Thanet to nurse the estates during her minority. There they died and in the Manston Chantry they are buried, their very memory is almost gone, their graves are unknown, and all that is left in the parish of this illustrious family is the solitary figure in brass of a lady in a butterfly head-dress, which now adorns that screen, which she must often have looked upon when in the flesh, and wondered at the beautiful figures of the saints with which it was adorned, little dreaming that when they were effaced by lawless hands, her own effigy would one day take their place, and become a cause of wonder to the village maiden of four hundred years later.
During the same century, and perhaps during the previous one, it is recorded by PHILIPOT, that many members of a family named ELINTON or ELLINGTON who resided at a place frorm which they derived their name, lay buried in St Laurence Church, and had inscriptions upon plates of Brasses fixed upon their Leger Stones; this family were succeeded by the THATCHERS about 1479, and they likewise were buried in the High Chancel, but neither Legers nor Brasses have been discovered of either family, they have all been destroyed or lost, and there is only one Leger Stone which may have belonged to this latter family, it is a large slab of blue stone, lying towards the south of the High Chancel, and has a matrix or indent for an oblong plate of brass, for an inscription and shield above, these have recently been filled in flush. (See Legers, No.40, page 88).

480. Sir Adam SPRAKELING, Kt., 1610. The date of the next set of Brasses is 1610. They are in a very fair state of preservation. (See Plate on opposite page, Nos. 3 and 4). They belong to a family who succeeded the Thatchers, at Ellington; marking the grave of Sir Adam Sprakeling, Kt., (see Ellington), and they consist of a Shield of Arms, mantled, bearing: Sable, a saltire ermine between four leopards’ faces, or, surmounted by a Knight’s helmet bearing the Crest, An heraldic tiger’s head, erased sable, ducally gorged, maned and armed or. And underneath is the inscription, full of genealogical information: "Here lyeth buried ye body of Sr. Adam SPRAKELING, Kt., sonne to Robt. Sprakeling, Gent., leaving issue 7 sonnes, Robt. Sprakeling, Adam Sprakeling, John Sprakeling, Henry Sprakeling, Henry Sprakeling, Charles Sprakeling, Thomas Sprakeling, and 10 daughters named Judeth Sprakeling, Elizabeth Sprakeling, Katheren Sprakeling, Mary Sprakeling, Annis Sprakeling, Katheren Sprakeling, Margery Sprakeling, Frances Sprakeling, Margret Sprakeling, Hanna Sprakeling, who died one the 7th day of April, aged 58. Salutis nostrae, 1610."

481. Adam SPRAKELING, Gent., 1615. The next two Brasses, Nos. 5 and 6, now under the Tower, formerly under the south choir stalls where their slab and indents may still be seen, relate to the second son of the above, and are surmounted by a brass plate, bearing: Sable, a saltire ermine between four leopards’ faces. or. Beneath is the following inscription upon an oblong Brass: "Here lyeth buried the body of Adam Sprakeling, gent., ye second sonne of Sr. Adam Sprakeling, Knight, deceased, who dyed the xxiiiith daye of September, in the yeare of our Lord one thousand sixe hundred and fifteene, leaving issue two sonnes Robert & Henrye & two daughters Katherin & Rebecca."
His wife, Ann, daughter of Henry HEYMAN, of Sellinge, died in 1659, and was buried at Chilham.

482. Margaret SPRAKELING, 1623. The last set of ancient Brasses consists of three Shields, which are let into the Leger Stone of Margareta SPRAKELING (No.2 in the Plate opposite page 101), the Leger Stone is under the tower now, but was formerly partly hidden under the Communion rails. This lady was daughter of Robert MOYLE, Armiger; the inscription will be found upon Leger No. 48, p.89.
The bearings upon the shields are as follows: Dexter at Top. Sable, a saltire ermine, between four leopards’ faces or, for Sprakeling. Sinister at Top. Gules, within a bordure a mule passant argent, in sinister chief a mullet, for Moyle. At Bottom. Parti per pale, Sprakeling impaling Moyle.
The last Shield was one of those missing, but was restored as before stated by Mr HILLS.
May we here earnestly express the hope that if any more Brasses are discovered, which by comparison with the remaining indents are found to belong to Leger Stones in this Church, they may be promptly restored; so that the curious as well as the devout may be constantly reminded of the Communion of Saints, and thus learn greater reverence for the House of the Lord which is the gate of Heaven.
It now only remains to transcribe the modern Brasses, all of which have been placed during the last half of the present century.

He was descended from an old Kentish family (Philpott, Vill.Cant.p.386), originally from Shalmesford4 near Chartham, from whence his ancestor about the beginning of the reign of KING EDWARD IV came into Thanet, to marry the sole daughter and heiress of John DAUNDELYONN (Lewis’s Tenet Coll.p.86) of Dent-de-Lion near Margate, who dying in the year
Hasted in his "History of Kent", 2nd edition, vol. x, p.400, describes them as griffins’ heads.
Sarah, widow of John Ticknor, bur. August 3 1785 aged 94. Burial Register.
Ann Pettit married Henry Curling, March 1 1719-20. Marriage Register.
Early mention is made of a PETIT family in Thanet, one of whom, John Petit was a feudal tenant of Christ
         Church Priory, Canterbury, in 1338.

1445, left his estate to his daughter and her husband. Of their son (or grandson) we only know that his name was Valentine, and that he had a son whose name was John, and who was an Alderman of the City of London. Alderman John PETTIT had a son called Valentine after his grandfather, he was seated at Dent-de-lion, and married Joan, daughter of ……./BEVERLEY, of Fordwich, a family who had been in possession of the Isle of Tancrey in Fordwich, since the reign of HENRY IV (Hasted 1st Edit. Vol 3, p.603).
Valentine’s eldest son, Edward Pettit (Berry’s Kent. Genealog.) married Elizabeth, daughter of Alexander NORTHWOOD, of Northwood, and their only son Elias died abroad without issue; therefore the second son Henry Pettit succeeded to Dent-de-lion; he married Dennis, daughter of ……../THATCHER, of Ellington, she died in 1607, surviving her husband eight years, and both were buried at St John’s Margate. They were succeeded by their son, also called Valentine, who married firstly Mary, daughter of Thomas CLEVE (she died in 1609) and secondly a lady whose name was Martha HENNEKER, of St Nicholas, who died without issue. By his first wife he had five sons and two daughters, and he died in 1626, and was buried in St John’s Margate, where a monument with a curious inscription records his piety and virtues. His youngest son was named Paule Pettit or Petite (Lewis Hist.Tenet.), who appears to have held some office under the Lieutenant of Dover Castle, at the time when James, DUKE OF YORK, KING CHARLES II’s brother, (Afterwards KING JAMES II) was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, A.D.1660-1668. We do not know whom he married, but it was his son (Captain) John Pettit whose Hatchment is described above; and upon referring to the Leger Stone of the Captain’s sister, Elizabeth, who married Thomas WILSON, will be found impaled the Pettit Arms quartering those of Daundelyonn.

499 (8). The Hatchment of Sir Thomas WILDE, First Lord Truro (afterwards Lord Chancellor). He married Miss D’ESTE, daughter of H.R.H. FREDERICK, Duke of Sussex, and Lady Augusta D’AMELAND, née MURRAY.

For Crest, on a Baron’s coronet, A stag lodged proper. Supporters, Two greyhounds proper salient.
   Motto: Equabiliter et Diligenter.
The Lady Augusta MURRAY, daughter of John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, and of Catherine his Countess, married HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS The DUKE OF SUSSEX in 1792; and it was their daughter who became the wife of the 1st LORD TRURO, succeeding to the Truro estate upon the death of her brother, Sir Augustus D’ESTE (see D’Este Mausoleum).

500 (9). The Hatchment of Mark Sellers GARRET, Esqre. of Nether Court, St Laurence (which see).

Supporters, The dexter, A horse argent, charged on the shoulder with a spread eagle or, maned and hoofed of the last; the sinister, A buck proper charged on the shoulder with a griffin’s head erased or, attired and unglued or the last.

1 and 2. Burke gives the same for Garrett or GARAT, of London.
   3. Lord Conyngham, Lord of the Manor of Minster, purchased Conyngham House, in High Street, Ramsgate,
of the Abbots subsequently to 1777, and it was held by the family till about 1814.

Upon the North Wall of the South Chapel.
501 (11). The Royal Arms of KING GEORGE II, dated 1729, evidently replacing an older achievement, perhaps that of KING EDWARD VI himself, of pious memory, who in 1547 ordered all Roods throughout the land to be pulled down, and the King’s Arms to be put up in their place; to show that the supreme head of the Church was an earthly monarch in the opinion of Parliament at that time.
Quarterly, 1st, Gules, three lions passant guardant in pale or; Impaling, Or, a lion rampant, within a double tressure, flory counter flory gules, for England impaling Scotland. 2nd Azure, three fleurs-de-lis or, 2 and 1, for France. 3rd Azure, a harp stringed or, for Ireland. 4th Gules, two lions passant guardant in pale or, for Brunswick: impaling Or, semée of hearts gules, a lion rampant azure, for Lunenburgh: on a point in point gules a horse courant, argent, for Saxony; on the centre of the fourth quarter an escutcheon gules charged with the crown of Charlemagne, or, as the Arch Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire.
For Crest, Upon a Royal helmet, The crown of England surmounted by a lion statant guardant or, crowned proper of the last. Supporters, Dexter, a lion rampant guardant or, crowned as the crest. Sinister, an unicorn argent, armed, crined, and unguled or, gorged with a coronet composed of crosses patée and fleurs-de-lis, a chain affixed thereto, passing between the forelegs, and reflexed over the back, also or.
   Motto: Dieu et mon Droit.
In the compartment below the shield, roses, shamrock, and thistle are engrafted on the same stem.

502 (12). Upon the South Wall of the South Chapel and close to the AUSTEN Memorial tablet is the Hatchment of Nathaniel Austen, Esqr., bearing: Or, on a chevron gules between three lions’ gambs erect, erased sable, armed of the second, for Austen; surmounted by a shield of pretence, argent, a chevron gules between three cocks of the same, combes and wattles or, for COBB.
For Crest, On a mural crown or, a stag sejant argent, attired gold.

BURKE’s "General Armory" with regard to this family says, "AUSTEN of Grovehurst and Broadford, Co. Kent (also of Taywell, same county, granted 20 April 1603) from which family derives that of Austen of Hertfordshire and Hampshire: of which was Miss Jane Austen, the celebrated novelist. Her brother Edward Austen, Esqre. inheriting the Godmersham estates, assumed the surname and Arms of Knight.

503. Canon Scott ROBERTSON in his article on St Laurence in the "Archaeologia Cantiana", vol.xii, p.372, states that on his visit to the Church, the Hatchment of John MURRAY, 4th EARL OF DUNMORE, was to be seen, as was also an achievement of Arms, bearing, Gules, two bars vairy, azure and argent. These last two are not now visible; but the Canon omits to mention No.3; and also No.11, which is of great interest, as GEORGE II was the last sovereign who, until his death, quartered the Arms of France upon the Royal Shield, his successor, GEORGE III, abandoning the claim, on the union with Ireland.
