Some Monumental Inscriptions of Patrixbourne Church,  Noted by Bax & Rice Thursday 5th May 1892

1. High tomb, E of church railed in the top. Here lieth the body of James de ROUSSEL Esq., who died August 1st 1775 in the 88th year of his age. Also Elizabeth Roussel his wife who died May 28th 1763 aged 72 years. They were Christian in word and deed and so abundant in good works that for many years the much more upon the poor than upon themselves. Yet such was their piety and devotion ………. were known to all, their charity was known only to those that were in need of it.

2. HS scull above. Here lieth the body of Samson FAIRMAN long inhabitant in this parish. he died September ye 17 1742 aged 66 years. Also ye bodies of John and Mary his son and daughter.

3. On S wall of church – outside. This humble memorial is placed with sisterly affection by Elizabeth Ann FARBRACE to notify that in a vaulted grave near this sport lieth interred the body of Mary the wife of Isaac Mushey Teale Esq., late of this parish but now of Altona in Denmark she departed this life to the mercy of Almighty God the 22 of November 1790 in the 25th year of her age. Three children now survive her.

4. HS Sacred to the memory of Lieutenant Richard Rose BRADLEY RN who died 24 August 1715 in the 67 year of his age.

5.. Large HS and bodystone North of chancel. Sacred to the memory of Edward son of Thomas and Mrs. KINGSLEY formerly residents in this parish, he was prematurely drowned in the prime of life whilst bathing off Ramsgate, on the 25th day of September 1837 in the 22nd year of his age leaving behind him to mourn their irreparable loss a father, brother and three sisters. The Lord gave and the Lord had taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

6. Headstone and small body stone close to and to the South of last. This humble tribute of affection is erected to the memory of Margaret daughter of Thomas and Ann KINGSLEY (of this parish) who departed this life the 27th January 1816 aged 5 years. Also of Edward infant son of the above who died the 20th November 1815 aged 8 months.

7. Head and body stone, close to and to the South of the last. Sacred to the memory of Ann wife of Thomas KINGSLEY of this parish who departed this life the 16th of November 1822 aged 35 years.

8. HS North of church; two sculls and crossbones at top. Here lieth ye body of John DRAY late of this parish who died April 29th 1720 aged 68 years. Also John his son by Mary his wife who died March 19th 1725/6 aged 34 years.

9. High stone tomb with panels (under yew tree) tot he East of the chancel, all blank except the top. To the memory of ye Revd. John BOWTELL DD five and fifty years Vicar of this parish and of Olive his wife second daughter of John Taylor, Esq., of Bitrous he died January 5 1753 aet 85, she died October 12 1757 aet 76. They were both righteous before God walking in al the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. Go and do thou likewise.

10. NB A ledger of white stone within the church of John DENNE 1690.

Chancell.
11. Flat Stone without Inscription. It has been inlaid with Brass Plates etc.

Body.
12. On ye N. Wall, near ye Pulpit, on a neat Monument with these Coats.
[I. Az. 3 leopards’ heads couped or (DENNE). II. Per chevron sa. & erm. on the sa. 2 lions’ heads erased arg. (ALLEN)]. (Parsons, 358). Near This Place lyeth ye Body of Elisabeth the Wife of Thomas Denne of this Parish, Gent, and only Child of John ALLEYAN of Stowting Gent, and Anne his Wife. She was born ye 12th Day of August, in 1680, and departed this Life ye 4th Day of September in 1701. She was a dutyfull Child, a Lover of Piety, & a very loving Wife.

13. Underneath, on a Flat Stone. Here lyeth ye Body of Eliz. the Wife of Thomas Denne, aged 21 Years, and 23 Days.

14. On Another, with ye Arms of Denne – as above. Here lieth ye Body of John DENNE, late of this Parish Gent, who dyed Dec. ye 7th 1690. Aged 71 Years. Elisabeth his Wife lyeth under this Pew, who was buried November the 16, 1680. Aged 52 Years.

15. On Another, near the N. Door. Here lieth the Body of Daniel, Son of John DENNE, who died Sept. ye 18th Day 1702. Aged 39 Years.

Side Isle to ye South.
16. On a Large white Marble Table, on the E. Side of ye S. Window.
[Gu. 3 roses argt. a chief vair]. In This Vault lies John TAYLOR Esq. who was born Dec. 7 1655 and died Apr. 4 1729. Survived by 8 of his Children, i.e. 4 Sons, and 4 Daughters. He purchased an Estate in this Parish Sept. 29 1694. Afterwards, another in Bridge; and when he had improved them, and raisd. a Beautyfull Garden to Bifrons, he settled ye Whole upon his Family. He gave several Ornaments of Value to ye Church: was a strict Oeconomist, a just Dealer, & Friend to ye Poor. His eldest Son Brook, LL.D. and FRS, dying in London, Nov. 21 1731 was buried in St Anne’s Church Yard, by his own Order. A Gentleman of Learning, great Ingenuity, and endowed with many valuable Qualities, both natural and acquired, wch. made him highly esteem’d by those that knew him, particularly ye Virtuosi; and, his Death much lamented. He left no Issue male.

17. On a like Table on ye W. Side of ye S. Window.
[TAYLOR (as before) imp. Arg. a bend betw. 6 martlets sa]. Here lies Olive ye Wife of John TAYLOR of Bifrons Esq. (who died in ye 60th Year of her Age, on ye 7th of April 1716). She had by him 10 Children; whereof 5 Sons, and 4 Daughters mourne for ye Loss of their good Mother. Margaret ye 3d. Daughter, who died May 24 1738 lies Buried near this Chancell.

18. In This Window, on a Small Pane of Glass, are ye Arms of TAYLOR impaling as above
[Arg. a \ int’ 6 martlets sa.].

19. On The Floor, on a black Marble Stone, with this Coat.
[Or, on a pale gu. (so hatched but (wrongly) coloured az.). a sword point upwds. arg. hilted or, on a chief az. 3 besls.]. (P.356. Sept.10, 1790) Per totum hoc Sacellum Sparsa est (Generosa Bargraviorum Terra). Cujus Familiae Armigerae, Johannes, Bifrontis Conditor, Et Haeres ejus Robertus, sub Hoc Marmore, unŕ cum Oxiribus (Jacent). Bello Civili, ex Partibus Regijs, Stetit, et cecidit, FAMILIA (Amen!). Lugens scripsit Filius et Frater Johan (Ecclesiae Xti Cant. Praeb). Johan: haeres, a Ruinis, In ruinas Lapidem posuit (An. Dni M.D.C.L.X.III).

20. In the West most Window, on the North Side of The Great Isle, are the Arms of FOGG. For which see Vol.1, Page 116.- in Ashford.

21. This Church consists of ye Chancell, Great, and Side Isle, and Vestry both to the South.

22. The Steeple, in which hang 3 Small Bells, is on ye South Side also, between the Side Isle and Vestry; and is cover’d with an handsome shingled Spire.

23. The Arches over the Chancell Door, and ye Great Door, to ye South, are adorn’d with ancient Pillasters, Carving, and Imagery.

24. The Inscriptions, on ye First & Second Bells are not legible. The Third, or biggest, is thus Inscribed. Ave Maria Gracia Plena.

25. This Church is a Vicarage, and has the Chapel of Bridge annext to it. It is dedicated to St. Mary. The Present Vicar is Herbert TAYLOR, A.M. the Possessor of Bifrons, viz. 1757.
(Mont. (P.358) in S.A. to H.T. says he ob. Sept. 29, 1763, aged 65).
