The Monumental Inscriptions in the churchyard of Newenden Church

Preface
This small churchyard contains (1917) only 51 Memorials. There are two in the church. The Parish Registers of Newenden 1559 to 1812 were printed in 1897 by the Parish Register Society. These inscriptions help to amplify some of the entries.

In the Church
1A On the floor at the west end of the nave a flat stone:- Rev. John WILSON late Curate of Newenden died 28 May 1831 aged 72

1B On the South Wall a tablet:- Sarah daughter of Samuel BISHOP gentlewoman and wife of Thomas AYERST died 12 June 1789 aged 40.

In the Churchyard - west end.
1C Thomas AYERST. Sarah Ayerst. She died 12 June 1789 aged 40. He died 8 April 1791 aged 45. They left surviving 4 sons viz: Thomas, Samuel, William and John.

2. Iden son of Samuel and Mary BISHOP of this parish died 27 February 1787 aged 27.

3. Priscilla daughter of Samuel and Mary Bishop of Newenden gent and wife of William GOBLE of Benenden, died 30 August 1793 aged 36. Left issue surviving William, Samuel, Priscilla, John, Iden, Mary and Sarah.

4. Altar Tomb. Harriotte Smith BISHOP wife of David Bishop of Beckley died ...............1848 aged 27.

5. Altar Tomb. (Top hidden by roses) North side:- Mrs Mary BISHOP wife of Mr Samuel Bishop of this parish died 3 May 1800 aged 78. South side:- Samuel Bishop died 26 December 1814 aged 91.

6. Mary wife of John MARCHANT died 23 October 1866 aged 73. John Marchant died 25 February 1879 aged 83. Left surviving 2 sons and 2 daughters - William, Anne, Charlotte and John.

7. Thomas SAWYER died 8 January 1763 aged ?48. Also 2 children Elizabeth and Thomas. Ann his wife who survives him with one son and 3 daughters. Also Ann his wife who died 29 May 1781 aged 66.

8. James RUSSEL late of Rye, Sussex died 20 August, 1856 aged 79. Also Elizabeth his wife died 18 March 1863 aged 82.

9. Charles LEVETT died 7 May 1892 aged 87. Also Jane Levett wife of above died 29 October 1904 aged 93.

10. Stephen LEVETT son of Charles and Jane Levett who was accidentally drowned in the Rother 25 August 1866 aged 24.

11. George LEVETT died 6 October 1861 aged 17.

12. Two infant Children of William and Eunice LEVETT Edith Maude born 1870 died 1872. George Stephen born 1871 died 1874.

13. John LEVETT died 8 February 1899 aged 66. Also Charlotte his wife died 19 February 1899 aged 62.

14. Enclosure with two marble scrolls to James HOOKER of London and Croydon born 1803 died 1864 and George son of James and Mary Hooker died 1863. Charles Frederick son of above born 1843 died 1846.

15. Elizabeth AYERST wife of Thomas Ayerst of this parish died 17 September 1845 aged 70. Above Thomas Ayerst died 4 March 1855 aged 81.

16. Altar Tomb. Louisa AYERST wife of Thomas Ayerst junior of this Parish died 23 February 1839 aged 38. Leaving issue Sarah Goble, Thomas Russell and Samuel. Also above Sarah Goble Ayerst died 13 June 1839 aged 14.

17. Thomas Burnet AYERST born 31 May 1835. Died 21 July 1897 at Lime Court, Beckley, Sussex. Also Louisa Jane Ayerst sister of above died 20 February 1916 aged 77.

18. Samuel AYERST of this parish born 5 July 1804 died 13 April 1859. Also Elizabeth Catherine his first wife born 21 April 1805 died 28 June 1845. Charlotte his 2nd wife born 8 September 1808 died 6 January 1886. Also Elizabeth Catherine his daughter. Born 13 May 1833 died March 1848.

19. Elizabeth daughter of John and Elizabeth HEY of No 1 Poplar Road, New Kent Road, Southwark died 8 January 1823 aged 6 months and 1 day. Also Thomas Ayerst Hey ..................20th 1825 (under grass).

20. Samuel Garland HEY son of John and Elizabeth Hey of No 1 Poplar Road, New Kent Road, Newington, Surrey. Died 25 August 1825 aged 1 year and 9 months.

21. John HEY died 2 July 1834 aged 7 years and 8 months.

22. Mr John HEY of London died 11 September 1854 aged 60. Also Elizabeth widow of above died 6 February 1889 aged 88. [She was Baptized August 1800 daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth AYERST].

23. William Thursley PARSONS died 25 January 1878 aged 76. Also Catherine Rebecca Parsons wife of above died 26 October 1872 aged 66.

24. Nelson BARNES died 1 May 1855 aged 31.

25. Rebecca wife of Samuel AYERST died 14 May 1806 aged 24.

26. Samuel AYERST of this parish born 13 June 1834, died 29 September 1857. There was hope in this young man's end. Also Mary Ayerst his sister born 24 February 1837 died 9 January 1892.

27. Mary TREE died 11 April 1865 aged 59. Thomas Tree her husband died 20 June 1870 aged 65.

28. William Louis HUTCHINGS of this parish died 15 January 1878 aged 61. Louisa his wife died 7 December 1899 aged 91. Louisa Letitia eldest daughter of above died 10 January 1889 aged 37.

29. Mary Jane eldest daughter of the late Henry and Mary DUNK of Hastings died 4 October 1888 aged 61.

30. Mary Jane wife of John CARTER died 25 January 1901 aged 61.

31. Richard DENGATE died 29 September 1893 aged 74. Mary his wife died 4 March 1892 aged 67.

32. James DENGATE of this parish died 4 January 1864 aged 75. Charlotte his wife died 17 February 1867 aged 85.

33. James DENGATE died 28 July 1891 aged 77. Naomi his wife died 26 September 1865 aged 36.

34. John BRIDGLAND died 9 February 1812 aged 45. Ann his wife died 19 October 1811 aged 31. Had issue 4 children. James, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and John. John died 10 August 1811 aged 5. Other 3 survive.

35. Edward JAMES died 24 September 1869 aged 61.

36. In a vault under this stone lies the body of Betty wife of Benjamin BISHOP, Gentleman, who died 2 October 1763 aged 30. Also 3 of their children Thomas and two Priscillas who died in infancy.

37. By west door: William Frederick eldest son of late Reverend John WILSON Curate of this Parish, died 12 August, 1834 aged 35.

38. Margaret Elizabeth infant daughter of Lewis and Harriet MERYON who died at Ramsgate 5 August 1841 aged 3 months.

39. Mary PODGER died 20 July 1901 aged 80.

40. Ann wife of Reverend John PUGHE died 16 February 1873 aged 75. Also Reverend John Pughe died 21 November 1878 aged 70. For 23 years Rector of this Parish.

41. James SELMES died 23 August 1914 aged 80. Martha Eliza wife of James Selmes of Lossenham died 5 July 1873 aged 37.

42. Edith Maria Francis CARLISLE of Frogshill born 10 April 1849 died 30 March 1916.

43. Annie May WENHAM born 1 May 1880 died 21 December 1910. Frances Mabel born 28 December 1876 died 27 January 1878. Daughters of Louis and Jane Wenham.

44. Kate daughter of James and Jane ELLIOTT of this parish died 29 April 1875 aged 19.

45. Charles Edward HUXFORD son of Robert and Alice Huxford died 12 July 1912 aged 17.

46. (Granite Slab) Lewis Hoddock MERYON born 22 November 1810 died 7 February 1874. Harriot Mercer Meryon born 25 August 1811 died 5 April 1875. Ann WILSON born 1770 died 10 April 1853.

47. South side of the yard a worn headstone mid 18th Century apparently to George FRENCH. At the top is a well carved Tudor rose surmounted by a crown [? the George French who was buried 1767].

48. Within iron rails: Richard ADES of Northiam Sussex died 21 February 1856 aged 81. Martha his wife died 31 May 1844 aged 58. Left issue one daughter: Martha. Martha only daughter of Richard and Martha Ades died 8 August 1858 aged 32.

49. James HICKMOTT died 15 September 1860 aged 61 Mary his widow died 11 October 1883 aged 79.

50. John EDWARDS died 14 September 1873 aged 75 Maria his wife died 5 February 1873 aged 79.

51. Jane BATES died 20 May 1892 aged 63. Samuel Bates her husband died 4 February 1858 aged 29. Mary Ann daughter of above died October 1858 aged 7 months.
