Inscriptions in the Churchyard of Hinxhill, Kent.  Taken August 1890.

1. Head – Phoebe wife of Edward DRYLAND died March 29 1841 aged 72. They had twelve children viz – Edward William, Gold Martha, Sarah, Richard, Mary, Margaret, Ann, Daniel, William, Frances, and George. Nine of whom are living, Martha, Sarah, Richard, Mary, Ann, Daniel, William, Francis, and George. Also Edward Dryland died May 24, 1848 aged 81.

2. Head – John AMOS of this parish died July 7, 1804 aged 48. He left surviving a widow, four sons and two daughter s – viz Richard Thomas, Elizabeth, John, William and Deborah Anne. Also Elizabeth Amos wife of above John Amos died 9 June 1833 aged 82.

3. Head – Chittenden ANDREWS of this parish died 5 December 1831 aged 75. Also Susannah his wife (no date). 

4. Head – George CLARKE late of Great Chart, yeoman. Died 24 December 1789 aged 68. Also Mary wife of the above, died 6 April 1813 aged 75.

5. Head – Mary wife of Thomas TUCKER of Willesborough born July 21 1814 died November 13 1882.

6. Head – William MAY died September 18 1870 aged 88. Also Jane wife of the above died August 10, 1868 aged 84.

7. Head – Mary CHITTENDEN late of Brabourn Relict of James GORHAM died 28 February 1838 in 72nd year. Also Edward Andrews Chittenden son of James Chittenden and the above Mary, died 10 March 1822 in 22nd year.

8. Head – James GORHAM late of Aldington died 26 June 1791 aged 24. Left issue by Mary his wife two children viz James and Hester.

9. Head – Daniel CHITTENDEN of this parish died April 5 1802 aged 80.

10. Head – Mary wife of Edward CHITTENDEN died 17 June 1791 in 45th year. Also the above Edward Chittenden died 2 May 1799 in 69th year.

11. Head – Mary wife of William SMEED of Goodcheap Farm in this parish died 8 April 1881 aged 75. Also William Smeed died at Ashford December 11 1889 aged 86.

12. A large, thick headstone – Daniel CHITTENDEN of this arish died December 18 1731 aged 42. Who left issue by Martha his wife three children, viz Dan: Mar(tha?): and Edward. Also Martha late wife of the above Daniel died December 6 1757 aged 58. Who left issue by her surviving husband three children viz Robert, Mary and William.

13. Head – Stephen STAINES and also Mary his wife of this parish who died March 22, 1769 aged 71. She died November 1 1774 aged 77.

14. Head – James Crell CHITTENDEN son of John and Sarah Chittenden of this parish died April ? 1778 aged 9 months.

15. White marble cross – In memory of our mother, Mary wife of Thomas RICKETTS died June 26 1887 aged 64. Buried on St. Peters day.

16. Head – Stephen WHITEHEAD died February 22 1882 aged 72. Elizabeth wife of the above died November 30 1883 aged 68.

17. Headstone – Carved with flowers, hourglass & c / Here lie the Remains of / Edward ANDREWS of this / Parish gent: who died / May 18 1754 aged 79 years / who left issue by Mary / his wife 5 sons and one daughter: / viz Thomas: Edward, Jo(n): Mary / William: and Benjamin / Also Mary wife of ye said / Edward and daughter of Thomas HODGES Gentleman: died March 30 1724 aged 45 years.

18. Head, with skull, crossed bones, and spade and pickaxe crossed on either side:-
In memory of Thomas ANDREWS who died the 18th of January 1773 aged 72 years also Martha wife of the above died the 9th of September 1789 aged 62 years. Left issue, one son and two daughters viz: Chittenden, Martha and Mary. 

19. Headstone – In memory of Thomas ANDREWS son of Thomas and Susanna Andrews of Willesborough who died July 13 1794, aged 4 years and 11 months. Dear friends lament for me no more, I’m gone but just a step before I’m gone from hence through Christ’s love To join the blessed train above My time on Earth was short with thee Prepared be to follow me. Also in memory of the above mentioned Susanna Andrews She died February 21 1802 aged 42 years.

20. Head – In a vault beneath are interred the remains of Thomas ANDREWS late of Willesborough gentleman obt 10th day of  May 1808 aged 73 years he left surviving by Susannah his second wife two sons and two daughters (viz) Onslow, Jemima, Caroline and Benjamin also left surviving by Eleanor his widow one son (viz) Thomas.

21. Head – Sacred to the memory of Edward ANDREWS of Folkstone in this county, gentleman, who departed this life June the 18th 1809 aged 75 years.

22. Flat tomb and cross – In memory of Thomas ANDREWS of Canterbury surgeon who died August 6th 1864 aged 59 years.

23. Headstone with death’s head and wings (close under the south wall of the church) – Here lieth the body of Elizabeth COVENEY the Widdow of Thomas Coveney of Hinxhill who departed this life ye 18th day of August 1687 in ye 55th year of his age

24. Headstone – engraved with endless snake crowned and hour glass:- Here lieth the Body of Christopher ELVEY of this parish, gentleman He died the 19th of October 1714 in the 56th year of his age also the Remains of Mary his wife, she died ye 8th of January 1768 in the 93 year of her age

25. Head – with cherub’s face, wings, trumpets John WORGER late of Wye died February 27 1768 in ye 80th year of his age. Also near this place lieth his two wives and 5 children.

26. Head – Mary daughter of Daniel and Frances CHITTENDEN of Blackwall in this parish died February 9 1837 aged 25.

27. Head. John SUTTON late of Elham died January 20 1785 aged 76, also Jane his wife died December 10 1786 aged 79. They left issue five daughters, Elizabeth, Mary, Anne, Jane and Rebecca.
 
28. Head. Susanna relict of Thomas SUTTON late of Hampton died 9 January 1801 aged 68. Left issue 3 sons Thomas, John and Daniel.

29. Head. with two cherubs heads and wings – Thomas SUTTON died December ye 30, 1775 in his 65th year. He left issue 4 sons and 2 daughter. viz Judith, Rebecca, and William by a former wife. Thomas, John and Daniel by the latter.

30. Head. Stephen HERITAGE late of Broadmead in the parish of Folkstone died September the 2nd 1828 aged 67. Also John Heritage, father of the above died February 24, 1795 aged 64. Likewise Mary wife of John Heritage died November 4. 1826 aged 91.

31. Head. Alfred CHITTENDEN died February 16. 1890 aged 52.

32. Head – Elizabeth BRENCHLEY spinster, late of the Parish of Willesborough died November 10. 1851 aged 75.

33. Head – George BRENCHLEY of this parish died June 17 1799 aged 59. Also Hannah his wife died 24 January 1827 aged 84. They had issue 13 children viz. Thomas, Ruth, Edward, James, David, Hannah, George, Elizabeth, Anna-Maria, John, Mary, William, and Daniel: Seven of whom survived them, Edward, James, David, Hannah, Elizabeth, John, and William.

34. Head. Thomas WHITEWOOD died March 21, 1881 aged 68. Also of Thomas Edward, and Walter John, (children of the above) who died in their infancy. He left surviving Frances his widow and two children – Margaret Kemp and Frances.

35. Flat-tomb – Stephen FINN late of Willesborough died November 28, 1871 aged 59.

36. Cross – Harriett GILBERT born May 10, 1879 died July 25, 1880.

37. Head. William BARRETT of this Parish died July 3 1791 aged 63. Left issue by Mary his wife two daughters viz. Susan and Mary.

38. Head. Mary wife of William BARRETT late of this Parish died 22 September 1800 aged 76.

39. Head. Joseph WRAIGHT of the parish of Little Chart died November 2. 1805 aged 24. An example worthy the imitation of youth.

40. Head. Elizabeth relict of Joseph COLLINS died August 31. 1787 aged 68.

41. Head. Judith WHITEWOOD wife of Thomas Whitewood late of this parish. Died July 7, 1826 aged 80.

42. Head. Thomas WHITEWOOD late of this parish, died February 9, 1826 aged 86.

43. An alter tomb: On the top the inscription of about 8 or 9 lines is chipped off except. …… 1773 aged 6 …… On the west-end is this coat:- On a chevron between  3 pheons as many crosses patee. Crest a demi lion (:) rampant holding in its paws a pheon. Above and below is the inscription "Wightwick of Plumpton" On the south side:- George, son of the said George Wightwick died February 16. 1749 aged 28 years. Frances daughter of ye said George and Frances Wightwick died January 28. 1749 aged 35 years. On the east end:- The said George Wightwick died June the 4th 1749 aged 66 years. On the north side:- Frances wife of the said George Wightwick died July 31. 1726 aged 32 years. Mary Daughter of George Wightwick, gentleman and Frances his wife died November 24. 1727 aged 7 months.

44. Headstone. In memory of John MOORE late of this parish of Hinxhill died 22 June 1773 aged 61 years. He left issue by Mary his wife 4 children, 3 sons one daughter. Elizabeth, David, Stephen and William.

45. Headstone. with skull, and book encircled with a serpent:- In memory of Jane ye wife of Stephen MOORE and daughter of John and Jane GOLDING who died 29 October 1755 aged 62. In memory of Stephen Moore late of this parish who died May ye 8. 1778 aged 95.

46. a medieval stone coffin, with traces of raised cross on the top (this is by the south east corner of the chancel wall).

Added to the Quarto Notebook in a different handwriting are the following two inscriptions:-
46a   Here lyeth buried ye Body of of Robert Wager late of ye Parish and Judeth his wife He died April ……1715 aged 57 years She died March 21 1723 aged 57 years. They left issue 6 sons and 2 daughters viz:- Elizabeth, Thomas, John, Robert, Stephen Judeth, Richard and Edward

46b   Edwin Georgina Billugla   only surviving daughter of Constance and George Hayle Bellugla late Lt. Col 6th Inskilling Dragoons born 19 September 1874 died 16 November 1949. 

In the eastern part of the yard-
47. Head. In the memory of George KINGSLAND late of this Parish who died at Willesborough August 11. 1883 aged 84 years.

48. Head. Sarah the beloved wife of Charles BULL of Willesborough, died June 19. 1880 aged 68.

49. Head. Sarah SMEED of this parish died July 20. 1867 aged 86. Leaving issue 3 sons and1 daughter (viz) Charles, Thomas, John and Sarah.

50. Tomb with iron railings:- Jeffery MORPHEW of Ashley House Cheriton near Folkestone, formerly of this parish, died 29 August 1873 aged 75. Elizabeth wife of Jeffery Morphew died 22nd July 1868 aged 75.

51. Alter tomb with iron railings:- Elizabeth wife of Revd. John PHILPOTT died 6th February 1878 aged 69. Thomas Philpott died 1st November 1865 aged 55. Elizabeth Hoile his wife died 28th April 1881 aged 75. Elizabeth relict of Thomas Philpott of Canterbury, died at Hothfield July 18th (15th?)1869 In the 92nd year of her age. having survived her

51f   Altar tomb:- George Ansell MURTON formerly of St. Leonards in the County of Sussex who died at Willesborough 8th April 1854 in the 47th year of her age.

52. Head – William Henry only child of Richard and Emily HILLS of Naccolt Farm, Wye, who died February 27th 1874 in his 9th year.

53. Head – Emily beloved wife of Richard HILLS of Naccolt Farm, Wye, who died July 28th 1875 aged 49 years.

54. Head – Tomb with iron railings – James JEFFERY late of Naccolt Wye, who died at Smarden December 5th 1872 aged 55.

55. Head – William HILLS of Naccolt who died January 6th 1870 aged 82.

56. Head – Ann wife of William HILLS of Naccolt died October 6th 1862 aged 74.

57. Head – John STEDDY late of this parish who died 30th March 1829 aged 68. Also Mary relict of the above who Died 13 September 1846 aged 83.

58. Altar tomb:-
Here rests in hope of a blessed Resurrection The body of Susanna ye daughter of Edward ANDREWS of this parish gent, who married to her first husband ye Revd Mr George JANUS of Littlebourne in the county by whom she had one Daughter who married Doctor John GRAY a very eminent Physician of the city of Canterbury. The said Susannah married secondly Thomas BACK late of this parish Gent, who died June 11th 1711 ##and left one son Thomas who lived to be 13 years of age (She had a considerable share in those troubles and Difficulties which attend Humanity) But after a life of good conduct with relation both to  temporal and spiritual matters, died as much like a Christian as she lived and into ye hands of her God, to whom she had long paid a constant Devotion, she meekly resigned her humble soul November 22, 1746  aged 69 years.

59.  Head:- Thomas BACK, son of Thomas Back, late of this parish, Gent and of Susannah his wife, He died February 27. 1723 aged 23 years. 

60. Head:- Thomas BACK, late of this parish, Gent: who left issue surviving by Susannah his wife, one son. He died June 11th day 1711 aged 35 years.

61. Head:- with skulls, flowers &c. (under the tree at the east end of the chancel) – Here lieth ye Body of Elizabeth wife of George POSSINGHAM late of Bethersden, who died August the 18th 1741 aged 57 years. Here lieth interred the Body of Elizabeth GREEN who died the 14th of May 1745 aged 91 years.

63. On the north side of the sacrarium a large monument with figure ??. At the
top is this inscription:- Candida marmorei cernis monumenta sepulchri Pectora designant candidiora viri Sobrias atq: pius fuit omnibus oequus amicus Virtuti, et vitijs strenuus hostis erat Conivgic foelix octenni, et prole quaterna quam simul ac dederat sustulit ipse Deus magnus erat natu, coelesti maximus ortu atq. alijs major quo minor ipse sibi.

Under the figures is the inscription:- Come hether mortals and lend us an eye not hence to weepe but heere to see to dye looke on our marble as a glasse and thus thoult looke upon thy selfe as well as us.

below is:-
64. Here lyeth the body of Robert EDOLPH of Hinxhill in the County of Kent Esqr. The eldest son of Sir Robert Edolph, knight, and of Dame Elizabeth his wife who was the Daughter of Robert Robot = ham of Raskills in the County of Yorck  Esqr. The said Robert Edolph married Cicily the Daughter of Richard Browne of the family of Bechworth Castle in Surrey Esqr by whom he had three sonnes and one Daughter yet left no issue. He died the 13th day of April 1631 in the 36th year of his age for whom his sorowfull widow yet living and loving his memory erected this monument. He sleepes in Peace and here his ashes may Expect in Peace The Dreadfull Joyfull Day Ano dni 1632.

Above are the coats of arms.

The lefthand coat is Edolph impaling sa, on a bend cotised or 3 lions passant or, a crescent for difference.

65. On the South wall of the chancel a tablet:- In memory of Thomas PHILPOTT of Canterbury Esq a Magistrate and Alderman of that city who after an active and useful life was taken to his rest This 1st day of November 1865 aged 55 years. and also of Elizabeth HOILE his wife who died 28th April 1881 aged 75 

66. On the beam at the entrance to the chancel is (THERE IS A SKETCH OF THE INSCRIPTION IN LEYLANDS NOTES)

In the Nave.
67. Flat stone. Here lieth ye body of Thomas COVENEY of this parish who died ye 31: of May in the year of our Lord 1687 in ye 69 yeares of his age. Here also lieth the body of John ye son of Thomas and Elizabeth Coveney who died ye 5 day of February 1694 in the 32nd yeares of his age Here lieth ye body of John The son of John and Martha Coveney who died ye 7th day of September 1696 in the second yeares of his age. Here also lieth interred ye Body of Martha wife of Thomas Coveney late wife of Edward WADE of Ashford Gent. who died January ye 25th 1722 aged 59 yeares.

68. Flat stone in the nave:- (THERE IS A SKETCH OF THE COAT OF ARMS IN LEYLANDS NOTES)
Here lieth interred the Body of Elizabeth COVENEY only Daughter of John Coveney late of this Parish Gent and Martha his wife who died the 27th of September anno Dni 1707 aged 14 years.

69. Flat stone in the nave (much worn):- …………………… body of Kenett BACK …………………, sometime Captane of ye trained bands who was ye loving husband of to wives and had issue by …………..en six ……………………………ents of his ……………….sons and Daughters (viz) Thomas  John, Mary, Thomasine Margaret and Elizabeth and departed this life the 72nd year of his age…..)bur. 13 March 1657). Said to be 30 years  9 November 1622 lic. to marry Elizabeth Blyebelt daughter of John Bull Brabene Gent and 36 20 October 1628 lic. to marry Margaret TOMPSON of Elham

70. There is a flat stone in the north chancel which is however much worn and no inscription can be made out.

71. On the floor at the west end of the nave is a small brass inscription:- Here lieth Robert GASELEY lernedman (?) which departid to God ye VII day of March the yere of our lord god MCCCCC & XII!! On whose sowle Jhu have mercy amen.

72. The eastern lancet:- To Elizabeth Murton CHALMERS wife of David Chalmers and daughter of the Rev. John PHILPOTT M.A. Rector of this parish – born at the Rectory 1840 married here 1867 died at Redhall near Edinburgh 1870. Erected by her husband.

73. Two light window on South side of the chancel:- Elizabeth wife of Rev. John PHILPOTT M.A. who died at the Rectory 6 February 1878 aged 69. Above is this coat:- gu, a cross arg, between four swords.

74. Eastern window of North chancel:- a figure of Christ as the Good Shepherd – "He shall gather the lambs with His arms and carry them in His bosom" Thomas STARTUP died 1878 aged 65.

75. window in the north aisle:- Placed here on the Rev. John PHILPOTT M.A. Rector of this Parish since 1837 completing the 80th year of his age on 17th December 1888.

76. In the western tower is a tablet:- Benefaction  To   Hinxhill  Martha WADE gave by will dated August 7th 1722 an annuity of forty shillings out of lands in This Parish and Wye to the use of the Poor not receiving alms. vested in The Churchwardens and Overseers 1825.

   I am Apprehensive that I have colourd Many of these Coats wrong; but Time had so defaced them, that, it was no easy Matter to make them out at all. I have, however, given them the same Colours in which they appear’d to Me.

The said Robert Edolph married Cicely the Daughter of Richard BROWNE, of the Family of Beckworth Castle in Surrey Esq. by whome he had 3 Sonnes and 1 Daughter, yet left no Issue. He died the 13th Day of Aprill, 1631, in the 36th Year of his Age. for whome his sorrowfull Widowe, yet living and loving his Memory, erected this Monument. He Sleepes in Peace, and here his Ashes may Expect, in Peace, the dreadfull Judgment Day. A.P. 1632.

78. On a Flat Stone. Here lieth The Body of Thomas COVENEY of this Parish, who died the 31st Day of May, in the Yeare of our Lord 1687 in the 69th Yeares of his Age. Here also lieth the Body of John the Son of Thomas Coveney who died the 5th Day of Feb. 1694/5 in the 32d. Yeares of his Age. Here lieth the Body of John the Son of John and Martha Coveney, who died 7 Sept. 1696 in the 2d. Yeare of his Age. Here also lies interred the Body of Martha, Wife of Thomas Coveney, late Wife of Edward WADE of Ashford Gent, who died 25 January 1722/3. Aged 59 Years.

79. On Another – with this Coat.
[Arg. on a bend engrld. sa. 3 slipped 3foils arg.]. Here lieth interred the Body of Elisabeth COVENEY, only Daughter of John Coveney late of this Parish Gent, And Martha his Wife; who died the 27th of September Anno Dni 1707. Aged 14 Years.

80. In The North Chancell, On a Flat Stone. Anne The Daughter of Nicholas and Elisabeth SAWKINS, born March 22 1656 And died the 25 of September 1658.

In The North Isle.
81. An Ancient Flat Stone, The Coat and Inscription, purposely defaced.
[probly. for Kennet BACKE, gent. captn. of Train Bands, ob. 1687. See HASTED, fol. ed. 3.274.- V.J.T.].

82. In The Church Yard are Memorials of The Family of WIGHTWICK in 1749; HOMESBY in 1689; and ANDREWS in 1746. On The Tomb Stone for Wightwick is this Coat.
[Az. 3 pheons or, on a chevn. arg. 3 crosses paty gu. WIGHTWICK].

84. Near The Church Porch is a very Ancient Flat Stone cut into the Shape of a Coffin; on which is a Cross Flory raised.

85. This Church consists of the Great, and North Chancells, The Body, and a North Isle; In The Steeple hang 3 Bells, 2 of which have no Inscription; the third: Joseph HATCH Me fecit. 1634.

86. It was dedicated to St. Mary. It is a Rectory in the Gift of Sr. John HONEYWOOD, Bart.
The Present Rector is The Revd. Mr. HOLDSWORTH 1758.
