1. On a Monument on the N. Wall. [¼ly
of 8 – probly. 2 ¼ly coats impaled: (MARSH). 1). ¼ly gu. & arg. in 1st
¼ a horse’s head arg. 2,5). Gu. 3 mermaids in pale arg. 3,4,7). blank. 6). Gu
a chevn. betw. 3 hammers or. 8). Gu. a Λ erm. betw. 3 cocks or.

Monumentum Thomae MARSH, nuper de MARTON, in Parochiâ de East Langdon Generosi,
in Cancellâ hâc sepulti; qui obijt Feb. 13 An.Dni 1634(5).
Aetatis suae 51. qui Liberos habuit, et reliquit, novem. viz: quatuor Filios, et
5 Filias. In cujus Memoriam Johannes Marsh, Filius ejus primo genitus, respectû
Heredis et Executoris Officij, Hoc Monumentum posuit.
2. On a Flat Stone. [PARAMOR
(3.118, Eastry) imp. BILLETY, 3 crescents (no tinctures) (CULMER)].
Here lies interred the Body of Thomas PARAMOR Gent. who was ……..or of this
Parish 21 Years. ………Issue 3 Sons and 4 Daughters. Also Mary, his Wife,
Daughter of …………CULMER Gent. He departed this Life 3 May 1701 in the 48th
Year of his Age.
3. On Another Flat Stone. To the Memory of Mrs Mary KNIGHT, Wife to Mr Thomas
Knight, who deceased November 2 A.D. 1617. And to the Memory of Anne Knight, the
Daughter of Mr …….. who died the 5th Day of December A.D. 1628.
4. On a Brass Plate fixt to a Flat Stone, partly hid by ye Rails. Here lieth
intombed, the Bodies of ………….. MASTER with 3 of her Children, sumtimes (the
wife) of James Master; by whome he had Issue
….onne and 3 Daughters, who departed this (life
the) xxii Day of July in ye Year of our Lord
1591. And in the xxxviii Yeare of her Age.
5. One very ancient Flat Stone without Inscription.
In The Body.
6. One Ancient flat Stone, which has formerly been inlaid; ye Brasses and
Inscription now lost.
7. This Church consists only of the Chancell and Body – in a wooden Spire, at
ye West End, hang 4 Bells – ye 3 first, made by Joseph HATCH 1627 and the 4th
by Robert CATLING 1749.
8. In the Church Yard are Altar Tombs for BAKER, PILCHER & WANSTALL and Head
Stones for ADAMS, BAKER and SAYER.
9. This Church was dedicated to St. Austin. It is A Rectory in the Patronage of
The (190b. present 1759) Rector is ……
10. [J.ARNALD. Jn. RATRAY is
Curate (& is Incumbt. of River). as also of Guston, at £26. p.a. Rectn.
worth £46 p.a. Is also Curate of W. Langdon sinecure, and lives at E. Langdon].
11. (Added).
At a Place call’d Poison Downe (which is either in this Parish, or Guston)
about ye Year 1760 – much Armour, and many human Bones were found, in digging
a Ditch.

12. East Langdon is situated about two miles to the South-west of the
last described church (Ringwould). It is a pretty village, seated in a
bottom of near twenty houses with a Church at the South end of it,
consisting of two ailes and a chancel, with a small spire at the West
end, containing four bells, all inscribed: Joceph HATCH made me. (O.E.).

13. On a mural monument of alabaster at the North side: Monumentum
Thomae MARSH nuper de Marton in Parochia de East Langden Generosi in
cancella hac sepulti: qui obiit Feb. 13 An.Dni 1634/5. Aetatis suae 51.
Qui Liberos habuit et reliquit novem vid. 4 filios et 5 filias in cuius
memoriam Johannes MARSH filios eius primogenitus respecti Haeredis et
executoris officii hoc monumentum posuit. Arms: (obliterated).
14. On a plain stone, in part hid by the Altar rails: Here lyes interr’d
ye Body of ……/ PARAMOR Gent who was ……/ of this Parish 21 Years,
……/ Issue 3 Sons & 4 Daughrs. ……/ Mary his wife (Daugr. of
Richard FILMER Gent) he departd. …./ life May ye 3d. 1701 …./ 48
Year of his Age. Arms: Paramor, impaling, 3 Crescents, betw. 9 Billets.
Crest: a fleur de lis.
15. On a white stone: To the Memory of Mrs Maria KNIGHT Wife to Mr
Thomas Knight who desceased November 2d. An. Dni 1617. And to the Memory
of Anne Knight the Daughter of Mr ………/ said Mary who died the 5
Day of December A. 1628.
16. On another at the South side. Here lie interred the remains of the
Revd. John RATRAY late Rector of this Parish, who died November 1st
1772, aged 88 Years. Also the remains of the above, who died 24th Jany.
1770, aged 78. And I heard a Voice from Heaven saying unto me, Write,
Blessed are the Dead which die in the Lord from henceforth.
17. On a small white stone: In Memory of the Revd. John QUETEVILLE, of
the Island of Jersey, Rector of this Parish who died 3d. of January 1788
Aged 63 Years.
18. The pulpit hangings are very antient and rich, being crimson velvet
embroidered with gold, in the middle are the effigies of a Man and
Woman; on a label from his mouth: Ave gra plena dus (sic) …../ (O.E.)
on another from hers, in ansila dm fiat mumbre filam. (O.E.).
19. This Parish is not large, but appears to be well inhabited.
20. In this Parish is a borough called Marton or Marton-street, which
appears to have been in the possession of the family of the MARSH’s,
one of whom is particularized in the 1st Epitaph in this church, prior
to any remaining documents; though the name appears originally to have
been written DE MARISCO. One of this family, Gilbert de Marisco was LORD
of WOOLWICH in the reign of EDWARD the FIRST*. (*Philpot’s, Vill. Can.
p. 211).
21. The soil in this Parish is in general fertile, and as the country
now becomes more inclosed the prospects are less extensive and less
diversified.
22. The Living is a Rectory, and the Church is dedicated to St.
Augustine.
23. Patron: The EARL of GUILDFORD. 1795. Incumbent: Thomas DELANOY.
