Epitaphs from Kent Churches
Back to Churchyards listed

In the Kent Archaeological Society's Library at Maidstone is a bound lined foolscap book containing handwritten notes of Monumental Inscriptions from some Kent Churches, entitled 'Epitaphs from Kent Churches'. There is no name of the author. The notes for each church are dated, between 1892 and 1897. In many entries there is a note to the effect that some M.I.'s were noted by R. G. Rice.  On page 76 a note states "Mr Bax went into church, but I did not. R.G.R." On other occasions, entries for some churches start with a note  "searched thoroughly for b's, none found".  At this moment I am of the opinion that the book was compiled by a Mr Bax.

However a search of the membership lists in Archaeologia Cantiana for the time around 1892 to 1897, reveals no member named Bax or R. G. Rice. A search of Kelly's Directory for this time proves un-successful. The 1881 Census reveals many Bax's residing in East Kent. A book of 250 pages published in 1950 by Arthur Nesham Bax entitled  'A Bax Family of East Kent; A Study in Social History' would seem to be most promising. However the length of time from 1892 to 1950 makes it unlikely the Arthur Nesham is the same person that complied our book.

The notes cover 138 pages and the contents are listed below:-
