James Kincaid the Elder, of St. Margaret's Bank, Rochester, Master Blacksmith in H.M. Dockyard, Chatham.
   Two houses in Garden Street, Brompton, occupied by Howell and Thomas Sugden, two houses in Manor Street, Brompton, occupied by Margaretson and Stephens, piece of land adjoining latter, occupied by his son, James Kincaid, to son James, for ever.
   Also to son James, 1,800 stock in the 5% Bank Annuities and his large silver punch bowl.
   Four houses in Prospect Row, Brompton, occupied by Denton, Rayring, Con and Diprose and nine houses in Garden Street, in Queen's Court, occupied by Wills, Townm, Briggs, Wheeler, Sutton, Stretton, Harleston, Lee and Jordan and seven house in Middle Street, Brompton, occupied by John Driver, Dunk, Whatman, Rogers, Whatman, Parsons and Sleegg and his own house in St. Margaret's Bank and four adjoing houses, occupied by Thomas Blackston, Roby, Edward Trump and March and three houses behind latter, occupied by Cheny, Everson and Rainey and 3,075 in the 5% Annuities, to son James, upon trust. He is to pay rents from four houses in Prospect Row and nine houses in Garden Street, and interest on 1,250 (part of the 3,075) to daughter, Mary wife of Benjamin Haite, Navy Clerk, for her life. After her death, the last mentioned houses and the sum of 1,250 to her children, equally shared at 21. If no children survive to 21, then to Benjamin Haite (if he survives), for ever.
Trustee to pay rent of seven houses in Middle Street and interest from 1,400 (part of the 3,074) to the youngest daughter wife of Charles Wilkes of Faversham, Gentleman, for life. After her death, to
her children shared equally at 21.
   If she dies with no surviving children then to Charles Wilkes, for ever.
   Income from his house (subject to his wife's life interest), and four leasehold houses adjoing, to daughter, Susannah, for rest of term, also interest on 425 (part of the 3,075), for life. Adter her death, then to her surviving children, if none reach 21, then to son James and daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, equally shared, after their deaths to their children at 21.
   To daughter, Mary Haite, a silver quart tankard; to daughter, Elizabeth, a silver pint mug; to daughter, Susannah, pair of silver salts, four silver table spoons and silver pepper box.
To wife Elizabeth, household furniture, linen, china, etc. Residue of real and personal estate, to son James, upon trust, he is to pay mother an annuity of 20 for life and to divide surplus between himself and sisters. After his wife's death, he is to share principal sum as before.Son James is executor.
   Witnesses: Edward Crump of Rochester, Gentleman, Jonathan Prall, Attorney, Rochester and Thomas Church, his Clerk.

   Witnesses: Stephen Dadd, Shipwright and Assistant Converter, H.M. Dockyard, Chatham and Richard Martin, Quarterman of the Shipwrights.
   Proved 22nd April 1802

James Kincaid, Gentleman
   Wife, Catherine, son George and Thomas Haite, Clerk of the Rope Yard, Chatham Dock Yard, are executors.
   A house in Manor Street, Brompton, occupied by Thomas Stott, to wife, for life, as long as she remains his widow. After her death, to son William, for ever. He own house in Garden Street, and household furniture, pair of silver salts with spoons, silver and china, (except stoves fenders, grates, coppers and fire irons, which are fixtures and furniture in front attic and set of china bought from Mr Farmer), to wife, for life, if she remains his widow. After her death or remarriage, then his house to son George, plus the items listed above and large silver bowl and silver punch ladle, for ever.
   Following the terms of a marriage settlement dated 8th November 1800, executors to pay wife 200 in 5% Bank Annuities, plus another 50 in same stock and interest on 300 same stock. After her death or remarriage, the principal of the 300 stock, to son Henry, for ever.
   Also to wife, interest on 600 same stock. After her death or remarriage, then the principal to son William, for ever. Also to wife, all spirits, liquors and casks.
   To daughter, Fanny wife of Samuel May of Sheerness, Mariner 500 in 5% Annuities and two silver table spoons.
   To daughter Betsy, 500, same stock and two silver table spoons, also bed, bolster, pillows. Four blankets, three pairs new cotton sheets, counterpane, six Clark Chamber Chairs and walnut chest of drawers. To son Henry silver pint can. To son William, gold watch, gold chain and two gold seals, one marked W.K., one J.K. And metal watch, two table spoons; if William dies pre 21, then this bequest to son Henry. To son William. Five books of the Old and New Testaments, four volumes of Rapin's History of England, volume of Natural History, all clothes, if William dies pre 21, the latter to sons Henry and George.
   To daughter in law, Catherine Windyer, 20 in 5% Annuities.
   Residue of personal estate, after expenses, to wife, for life, "for her greater comfort and happiness". He desires daughter Betsy to leave her house within three months after his death, so wife can have possession. Executors to pay Betsy 30 for furniture; if she does not leave, the 30 to son William.
   20 to nephew, Thomas Haite, Clerk of the Rope Yard, for his kindness in acting as executor and whatever money is left in the 5% Annuities.
   Witnesses: Richard Hughes, Master Boat Builder, T. Trott, Master House Carpenter, both of Chatham Dock Yard.
   Proved 16th July 1816 Thomas Haite now described as Thomas Mears

Frank Haite, Gentleman
   All real estate, invested money, ready money, furniture, household goods and effects, to wife, Betsy, for ever. She is executor.
   Witnesses: Thomas Ruston?, Attorney of Rochester and Mary Newlyn, Servant to Mr Haite.

Executors to gather in all his household goods, furniture, corn, hay, fodder, hop poles, cattle, sheep, hogs, wagons, carts, ploughs, harrows and other live and dead stock; all personal estate and to sell for best price.
Proceeds to son Joseph and daughter Elizabeth wife of James Dodd, equally shared, and then to their children. All real estate to son and daughter, as above. If they have no lawful issue, the property to his sister in law, Bet Bradley, wife of [     ] Bradley, a Dredger, and daughter of John Summersett, late of Prittlewell, Essex, a Riding Officer, for ever.    His marriage settlement should be respected.
   To wife Mary, money due from the Friendly Society of Artificers at H.M. Dockyard, Sheerness, of which he is a member.
   To daughter Sarah, wife of William Sugden, 400 in the 4% Bank Annuities; also to Sarah, 100 and interest, owing to him, upon mortgage, from a house in Strood.
   To grandson William Sugden, the new red brick house in Mansion Row. To daughter, Susana, wife of Thomas Tempest, 500 of the above stock; also to her, 100 in the 3% Annuities, now in the names of friends, Francis Harrison and Robert Horsnail, as trustees.
   To daughter, Mary wife of Samuel Stroughill, 200 in the 4% Annuities.
   To good friends, Robert Horsnail of Strood, Shipwright and William Horsnail of Strood, Sail Maker, 800 in the 4% Annuities and the further sum of 400 in the 3% Annuities, now in names of Francis Harrison and Robert Horsnail, upon trust.
   Trustees to permit daughter, Mary to have the interest, for life. After her death, in trust for the maintenance and education of her children, until they are 21, when they will share the capital, equally.

William Sugden the Elder

   To son William, the gold buttons in his shirt sleeves, clothes and watch.
   His brother Thomas, of Garden Street, Brompton, John Lock the Elder, of Chatham Barracks and wife are executors.

   Brother Thomas is now dead and Mr Lock is very busy, so he now appoints daughter Mary Stanton joint executor with his wife.

   His wife died today and his daughter Mary is a widow, daughter Rebecca is unmarried.
   None of his property shall be shared (excepting son William), until these daughters are provided for by marriage or "any other way providence may bless them".

Affidavit dated 15th June 1816
   Francis Hope and John Vinall are sworn. They witnessed last codicil in each other's presence and that of Sugden. In the margin Sugden wrote that his grand daughter, Mary Susannah to be taken care of in case of her mother's death, until she is provided for. They confirm this was added in their presence by Sugden.

Residue, after debts and funeral costs are paid, to his wife and son Thomas, as trustees, they to convert into cash and invest in Public Funds. Wife to have interest. After her death, upon trust. Interest to daughter Sarah wife of Nathaniel Crips, for life. After her death, upon trust for benefit of grand daughter, Sarah Howell daughter of Thomas and Margaret, until she is 21.
   After his wife's death, if there is a surplus above 200, then the 200 to be paid to daughter, Ann, wife of Joseph Clout, for ever. Residue of capital stock to son Thomas, for ever.

Proceeds to George Nash, brother Thomas, sister Margaret wife of Nathaniel Goddard, nephew Joseph Clout, nephew Paul Heath, niece Mary Jordan, wife's niece Mary Cole, Captain Richard Clements and wife's niece Ann Clements, equally shared.
   Interest only from share of Paul Heath and Mary Cole to be paid to them. After their deaths their executors will receive the capital sums.
   Residue of personal estate and effects to George Nash and Joseph Clout, they to allow his wife to receive interest, as long as she remains his widow.
   To sister Margaret Goddard an annuity of 7s per week, after her death her husband to have an annuity of 3s 6d per week.

   Wife Ann is executor. Desires to be buried in Gillingham churchyard in same grave, under the same stone where his late wife, Elizabeth is buried.
   To wife Ann, his freehold house in Brompton Street, occupied by Thomas Mellin, Shipwright, for life. After her death, to his brother, John, for life. After his death, (but chargeable with an annuity of 20/- to the Churchwardens and Overseers of Gillingham, upon trust. The house then goes to Hind, son of brother John, for ever.
   The above annuity is for the benefit of 6 poor people of the parish, to be distributed as the church thinks fit. When cousin Hind takes possession of the house, he is to pay Susanna and Mary Ovenden of Stone near Faversham, 10 each. In default of this payment, the bequest to Hind is void and goes to Susanna and Mary.
To brother John, 150 and clothes; however if John dies before the legacy is paid, then his son Hind will have 100 and Henry, Susanna and Mary Ovenden shall have 15 each, and to cousin Jane Stringer, wife of William, 5, this all out of the 150.
   To Mary West, wife of James and to Ann and Elizabeth Marshall, 2 guineas each. Another 3 guineas to Jane Stringer; to William Renwick of Ratcliff Highway, Gentleman, 3 guineas; To Mary Smith and Elizabeth Splidt, wife of Philip the Younger, Rope Maker, of Prince's Square, 1 guinea each; to Curtis Anderson, son of Thomas, his wife's Godson, 1 guinea; to Hind Marshall, 50 at 20 or out of his apprenticeship to Stephen Bingle.    To wife Elizabeth, all real estate and household goods and wages due and money in the Life Assurance Office, Norwich, for life. After her death, the household contents to his two daughters, Sarah Ricketts and Elizabeth Gamon, shared equally, the furniture to be shared with son Samuel, Thomas Mearnes. Wife and daughter Sarah are executors.
   Witnesses: William Whittle, Thomas Bullbrook and John ( ? )
   Proved 10th April 1837 Power reserved to Widow
