Thomas Lear was the Boatman, who together with his passengers was drowned at Rochester Bridge. Lear's passengers were marking the 21st birthday of Thomas Gilbert by making a trip to have a tea party at Wouldham. The party consisted of Thomas Gilbert, his sister Eliza, Alexander Mills, his wife Maria and their infant. The other victims were nine young girls, aged from 6 to 11, pupils at Mrs. Mills school in Chatham. When passing back through an arch of the bridge, the boat capsized after striking a large piece of timber which had been carelessly left across the arch after some repairs. Some people were surprised that Lear, an experienced and sober man, should have tried to pass the bridge at that state of the tide, which caused a four foot drop to the down river side of the bridge. On the outward trip, some of the passengers walk to the up river side of the bridge, rather than pass through; perhaps everyone was tired on the way back and not fully alert to the risk?

James Burford was a Boot Maker 121 Strood High Street (Post Office Directory 1870), and at Canal Road (Post Office and Kelly's Directories 1878 and 1882)
