Monumental Inscriptions of All Saints Church, Frindsbury - recorded by D. E. Williams 2011

Introduction All Saints Church, Frindsbury, ME2 4UR stands on an elevated position a short distance north west of Rochester, and is a prominent structure on the skyline for a considerable distance around. Unlike most of the Medway Towns ancient churches, it was not partly destroyed and rebuilt in the 19th century, (the north aisle is a 19th century structure). The monuments in the churchyard have been undisturbed and represent a wide range of dates and designs. Many of the larger monuments even retain their original railings, surviving the depredations of two world wars. This is a unique feature in the towns, and a credit to past vicars and parishioners.
This record was made in the winter of 2010 – 2011, when the low raking light of the sun was essential to highlight the most worn inscriptions.
The ground level of the churchyard is often considerably higher than it was in the 18th century, at least 12 inches if not more, those parts of the inscriptions below ground level are in very good condition, even where the exposed inscription has almost gone. I have done my very best to identify as many monuments as possible, but a few will remain lost to time, weather and acid rain! The earliest surviving, datable stone is of 1685 and the most recent 2007.
Where details are missing from the monuments I have filled in gaps from the registers, thus: [   ]. If the
identity is uncertain, I have inserted a question mark.
Among the highlights of this survey was the discovery of the Needler cousins, who are buried inside the church. see Notes.
I have included notes on as many of the people buried here as I was able, the most informative from Wills, also Directories and the Census, etc., some very brief, and some substantial, I hope this proves of interest, and puts some flesh on the bones.
