Monumental Inscriptions of St Mary the Virgin Church, Chatham - recorded by D. E. Williams 20??

Introduction St. Mary the Virgin was, at one time, the busiest parish church in Kent. Following redundancy, it had a brief period as the River Medway Heritage Centre but is now empty and neglected. The churchyard is also generally neglected, although, in 2010 and again in 2012, Medway Council cleared undergrowth and self sown sycamores. Unfortunately, during the latter operation, the sarcophagus on the Lloyd tomb was destroyed ! Following the 2012 clearance, more light was let in enabling me to record more worn inscriptions by taking advantage of raking light.
In 1946 the Chatham Borough Surveyor produced a map of the churchyard, pinpointing every monument, although there were some inaccuracies and at least one omission. Unfortunately, in 1959, the same authority cleared the western portion of the churchyard of almost all the existing monuments, (about 200), without a proper record being made. This was a baffling piece of municipal vandalism because there is more than adequate wall space to have accommodated all of these monuments.
Although the churchyard monuments had been transcribed by the Kent Family History Society in 1986, I thought a fresh transcript might be useful, especially because I believe it is important to follow the original layout, this is not the case in the K.F.H.S. version.
Soon after I started, I realised that there were some omissions, inaccurate names and dates in the K.F.H.S. version. However, many of the inscriptions recorded by the K.F.H.S. are no longer legible, and some monuments are missing altogether! I have tried to be as accurate as possible, making use of the parish registers, wills and other sources to confirm dates and names.
I have included thorough précis of all the wills I could find, and brief notes on as many individuals as I could. These basic notes come from sources such as directories, newspapers and parish registers.
