family who are thought to have given their name to Fairby, in Hartley. Another, John Aston, had many years before been rector of Ash, at which time, perhaps, he had. been touched for the five marks.³⁶
   At some stage, apparently, Idley was outlawed for his sins, but in 1477, by which time he had acquired another alias, ‘late of Chilham, co. Kent, esquire’, he 

received a royal pardon.³⁷  Esquire he may have been, gentleman he seems not to have been. Having found no record of his subsequent achievements, we must leave this not very satisfactory person as ‘late of Chilham' and, in so doing, part company with another old Ash family. Probably with him the family parted company with Ash.
