Toke's and others, Heraldic Ledger Stones in Kent churches

Daniel SKYNNER  1659  Old St James Church, Dover

The shield of arms is cut on a white marble tablet inserted in a bluish ledger stone, which measures 81inch x 40inch. Round the shield, which is in relief, is incised the scroll work in the blue stone. The shield measures 13inchx 11˝inch: shield and scroll work together measure 19inch x 20inch. On either side of the arms and scroll work are two small shields, on the dexter one the words "Daniel SKYNNERinch and on the sinister "Elizabth his wifeinch. The ledger stone is on the floor of the Sanctuary and faces south.

Arms: Dexter or, a chevron engr. betw. three lions ramp. sa. on a chief indented on the second as many stags heads, erased, of the first. For SKYNNER. Sinister .. a chevron .. betw three birds’ [stags?] heads erased. Impaling .. on a base wavy a tree betwn three birds, one inclining with head erect, and two in base, pecking on the ground, each facing the tree.

Here lieth Mr Daniel SKYNNER, Merchant of Dovor [bo]rne at Braintree in Essex and m[arr]ied at Antwerpe in Brabant to M[rs] Eliz. VAN ELSLANT, by whom he had issue Thirteen sons and two daughters who departed this life the 12th day of March 1659 Being in the 80th yeare of his Age. O supplex morbi pelag .... gr .... stus navigat in Potui fidus ... Persoluit Nantum .... Peccatis solui super... ...oras. Here also lieth ye Body of Mrs Elizabeth Van Elslant Born at Antwerpe wife of Mr Daniel Skynner above. She dyed ye 7th August 1679 in ye 90th yeare of her age. Also here lieth Mr Abraham Skynner (merchant) 4th son of ye above said Mr Daniel Skynner and Mrs Elizabeth Van Elslant his wife. He departed this life ye 12th of February Anno Dni 1661 in ye 49th yeare of his Age. Also here lieth Mr Constantin Skynner, 11th Son of the above said Mr Daniel Skynner and Mrs Elizabeth Van Elslant his wife. He died the 1 of Aprill Ann. Dni. 1666, Aged 39 years.
