BLAKBORNE of Ebbeney within Isle of Oxney (sic), 2 May 1498.
Buried within the Church of St Mary of Ebbeney near the door of the
Choir as possible.
High altar 6s.8d. and to work of the church 6s.8d. A priest celebrate
for my soul, parents, etc. for one year in the church and have ten marcs
(£6.13s.4d.), beginning at Xmas next.
Wife Agnes all utensilia of my house called household, also residue of
goods and chattels after paying debts, etc.
Executors – Wife Agnes, Dom Thomas HEYMES, chaplain, and Thomas WODE.
That my Feoffees in the surest way as can be advised grant to the
Wardens of the church of Ebbeney and other efficient men of the parish
– those 3s. of yearly rent from the tenement of Herry AT WOOD of
Appuldore to be bestowed yearly for a taper 2s.4d. to brenne at times
requisite before the Image of Our Lady of Ebbeney, and 8d. yearly to the
curate or his deputy of the same Church to pray for my soul openly in
the pulpit every Sunday in time of the beeds as is there accustomed.
Also the said Wardens and two other sufficient men have a parcel of
marsh land of one acre, situated to lands of Prior of Christchurch north
and east; to my land west.
That 10d. yearly of the profits coming be bestowed in amending the bad
way from the Est gate of the Churchyard of Ebbeney unto the Crosse of
Ovenam; also 10d. yearly in repair of bad road betwixt the north gate of
the same church and the Very (Ferry) way. The residue of profits
from the land to the work of the church of Ebbeney by discretion of the
Wardens there.
That my Feoffees shall enfeoffe the Wardens of the church of Appuldoore
and three other efficient men of that parish, of and in my messusge at
Appuldore to the Fish-shamell there north, to and a lane called
Andirkynlane west, the yearly profit to the use of the Chapel of St
James in the Hoth (i.e. Heath) at Appuldore 12d; and yearly in
amending bad roads between same Chapel and church of Appuldore 12d; and
residue of profits to the work of the church of Appuldore by the Wardens
there.
That Henry HOORN, Esquire have ten acres of wodeland between Alanger and
a parcel of woodeland sometime Robert PASSOUR’s. Also another parcel
of wodeland called Upstok of seven acres, to the wodeland of the Abbot
of St Augustines south, and the wood of same Henry HOORNE west; lands
late of Gervis HOORNE north, and to the Kings high street east, and to
his heirs for ever, so that Henry HOORNE pay to my Executors 10s. for
every acre and money to pay my debts, etc.
Stephen HICOT have a parcel of land containing a farthing (i.e.
fourth part or small portion) land, in exchange for two acres and a
garden.
To the use and finding of my son Thomas during life of Agnes my wife,
yearly out of my tenement land, lands upon the Dennes of Ovennam and
Borneland 2s, and then Agnes have all profits from same tenement and
lands until son Matthew is 21 years of age, which shall be in the Feast
of the Apostle St Matthew in year 1514. If Agnes so long live, then at
that date my sons Andrew and Matthew have issues and profits from same
for four years and then delivered to them and their heirs for ever, but
if either die without issue then the over liver to have same, paying
yearly to John and Thomas my sons and their heirs 20s. each. If Andrew
marry before the time it ought to be delivered to him, then Andrew have
my lands called the Wayfeldis, and the tithe, saving the portion of
Mathew thereof.
Son John take issues and profits from my two messuages in Redyng with
all my lands in Hundred of Tentreden until Feast of St Matthew 1514,
then son John have same and to his heirs for ever.
After death of Agnes that son John have ten acres of wodeland in
Appuldore situated to lands late Gerves HOORN east, the high road west,
and lands of Richard FELDESWELL south.
Wife Agnes have all my lands etc. in Appuldor, Wodchurch and Kenarton
for her life, then to Thomas my son and his heirs for ever.
That my part of the tenement and lands called Heymes in the Hundred of
Tentreden (sic) shall at the next Feast of St Michael after this
making hereof or at any other time after when required that my Feoffees
deliver estate to Sir Richard GULDEFORD, Kt, and to his heirs for ever,
he paying to my Executors for my part £80 and 40 tuns of Timbre, with
the fall of the same timber according to divers indentures thereof
between us made.
From the money to the priest named in my Will for his salary ten marcs (£6.13s.4d)
and to the marriage of either Marion and Joane my daughters 20 marcs (£13.6s.8d.),
but if both die the money to use of my sons until the Feast of St
Matthew, and ten marcs of the £20 and the ten marcs if any daughter
dies unmarried shall be for payment of my debts, etc.
That the 40 tons of timber out of Heymes shall be for repairing my
houses, etc.
If all sons die without issue then my lands and tenements on Dennes of
Ovenham and Bromeland shall be taken to terme for seven years and the
profits coming bestowed for a priest singing for our souls in the church
of Ebbeneye as long as it will endure, and at end of seven years remain
to my next heirs.
Codicil – made same time – If sons Andrew or Matthew die without
issue in life time of Agnes my wife, then Agnes have yearly 20s. out of
my tenement of Ovenham.
