Abstract of St Lawrence Thanet Wills from Arthur Hussey’s Manuscripts

Will of Stephen TAYLOR 3 Feb 1479-80 of St Lawrence Thanet

Stephen TAYLOR of St Lawrence in Thanet, 3 February 1479-80.
Buried in churchyard.
High altar for tithes 12d. To Dom Semanus LANE 4d. To operibus eccliese 20d. To each Light in the church of which I am a Brother 4d. To Godleve BODILL if she remains true and faithfully with my wife Joan, until she comes of lawful age 20s. To John COPPYN 20s. under same condition.
That there shall remain in my dwelling house after death of my wife una tabula plicat (?folding table) and one chair.
To Richard JOHNSON 20d.
To Richard my son after death of Joan my wife one brass pot, four pieces of electr and a great cooking pot.
Nicholas my son after death of Joan one brass pot, one pan, four pieces of electr and a chest.
Agnes my daughter then one brass pot, four pieces of silver, one pan, one basin and one chest (cistam), one ciphum (bowl) le maser.
Wife Joan have a horse and cow.
Executors – wife Joan and son Richard with Richard NORTHWODE supervisor.
Feoffees – Richard NORTHWODE, Nicholas UNDERDOWNE and Thomas JURDAN.
   Wife Joan have, use and occupy all my lands and tenements until son Richard is 18, then Joan have for life 15 acres and one virgate of land with appurtenances, whereof five acres are at Wyntyrdane Cross, between land of heirs of Thomas Taylor towards the south, the land of the heirs of Richard COKELYN towards the north, and three acres and half of land are at Cuttyngs, between lands of the Monastery of St Augustine north, the land of the heirs of Thomas LAMBYN south, and four acres are situated there between lands of heirs of Thomas THOMPLYN west and east, and at death of Joan the aforesaid 15 acres and one virgate of land to Richard and Nicholas my sons, and that son Nicholas have of that land nine acres.
   Son Richard when 18 years old have the house where I live and one Berton (house) and 14 acres of land, whereof the said house and three acres at Newynton between land of the heirs of Thomas THOMPLYN west, and land of Roger SEYNNYCOLAS east, and nine acres with a croft there, between the common road north, land of William SAUNDER south, and one acre of land at Gore Cross between the common semita (lane) or footpath east, and land of Abbey of St Augustine west, and the Berton with one acre of land at Newynton, between land of Thomas TAYLOR south and east, and to his heirs for ever in fee simple, saving the right of dower during widowhood of my wife.
   Son Nicholas when 18 have a messuage and garden and 11 acres of land and one virgate at Northwode, between messuage of heirs of Thomas TAYLOR east, the wood of John MARTYN west, and the said garden situated at Bakere between land of Robert THOMPLYN east and north, and three acres and three virgates of land at Nelmynton between land of heirs of John GIBBE west, and the common road east, and three virgates of land at Blakstonis townis between land of Abbey of St Augustine north, land of Robert THOMPLYN south, and one acre and half of land there, between land of heirs of Thomas FROST east, land of Abbey of St Augustine west, and five virgates of land there between land of Thomas BAKER north, and land of Robert THOMPLYN south, and three acres at Felde between land of John THOMPLYN north and land of Thomas LONG south and to his heirs for ever, saving always right of dower during widowhood of my wife.
   If both sons died before 18, then to be sold and for the money to daughter Agnes 10 marcs (£6.13s.4d) and for a chaplain to celebrate in the church for my soul, etc 10 marcs, and residue to operibus of the church, and in other works of charity.
