Abstracts of Littlebourne Wills from Arthur Hussey’s Manuscripts

Will of Thomas RIGDON of Littlebourne 28 April 1525

Thomas RIGDON of Litleborn, 19 April 1525.
Buried in church of Litleborn in the space before Our Lady altar near to the burial of my father.
   High altar for tithes a wether sheep. To the buying of a Cope to the Church of Litleborn 20s. To the making of the window that my father willed to be made in the church 6s.8d.
   At my burial Placebo and Dirige and ten masses, and poor people to be refreshed with meat and drink at discretion of Ex’ors.
   To my mother the cow that came last from Brege, and the calf of the cow be spent at my month’s mind.
   Wife Joan all household stuff, brass, pewter, etc. with all poultry, 100 sheep as they run out of the fold with their wool, the best time which she shall choose, heifer bullock of two years, four bacon hogs, and sow at St Michael after my death; five seames of wheat and of barley out of my growing crops.
Son William 20 wether sheep, and my brother William RIGDON the best cart and the five horses as they stand in the cart stable, with all their harness, also a plough with all thereto.
   Stephen RIGDON my brother a red horse having a wenne under his bely (sic), six ewe sheep with their lambs, two bushels of barley.
   Martin MUNYS two bushels of barley; John SELLYS four bushels of barley; John SHOTTAR two bushels of barley; Thomas BURGES two bushels of barley; Thomas POWES two bushels of barley.
   Raff LOKYN two bushels of barley for a reward beside their wages if they fulfil with my Ex’or the covenant between them and use for residue of this years service.
   Edith TAYLOR and Alice HAME each have a heifer one year old, the best they can choose among my cattle.
   William SYM two bushels of barley and to every child of Robert SYM a bushel of barley.
   John STOKS, gentleman [of Lee] one seame of wheat and of barley.
   To the Monastery of St Aystyn a seame of wheat and of barley, for to make me a brother of their Chapter House and pray for my soul and friends; and to be divided among the monks four seams of wheat and of barley under condition my brother William RIGDON may have and continue my term in the ferme of Garinton all the time of years granted to me by Indenture on that behalf.
   To the high (sic) Prior of that Monastery 40s. under condition my brother William have ferme at Garinton as aforesaid.
   Residue of my sheep and rudder [horned cattle] cattle, except my weaning calves, equally between William, Alice, and Juliane my children, each heir to other, but if all die under lawful age, to be bestowed in charitable deeds for our souls.
   Residue of goods after paying debts etc. to Robert SYM and William RIGDON my brother, my Ex’ors, to be good to my children and give their part as they think convenient.
   Each Ex’or to have a horse [named and assigned to them] and John STOKS, gent, my overseer.
   Witnesses – Sir Thomas BROWNE, vicar of Litilborne (1524-40), John PARKER, Edmund COWPER, John DEALE.
