Abstracts of Littlebourne Wills from Arthur Hussey’s Manuscripts

Will of Richard ELGAR of Littlebourne 16 October 1557

Richard ELGAR of Litilborne, 15 August 1557.
Buried in church yard near my mother.
To poor people at my burial 20s.
   Son John my lease of Mr OVINGTONE’S lands, if he suffer Alice my wife to have the profits during her life.
   To the reparation of the church 5s., part to make a light over the Roodloft.
Wife have half my wood-stack and household, and £10.
   Son Richard my lease of the parsonage of Litilborne and lease of Formarsh in Ash, all my horses, mares, plows, carts, coorts [cart for manure], harrows, etc. £10 and residue of household.
   Sons John and Robert £50 each, sons Michael and Bartholomew £30 each.
   Wife Alice have her dwelling in the Parsonage-house, and £3 yearly during eight years for bringing up of my son John, all her wearing apparel, and one live ware hogg.
   Wife Alice have lands, tenements bought from Robert DURRANT and Stephen LUKINE, which was late Elizabeth SELLES [see her Will, 1552] for her life; then to son John.
   Son Robert my lands and tenements in Ickham and two acres in Littleborne called Gravel Petts next Downeham, also two tenements and gardens next to the parsonage for ever.
   Son Richard three acres of marsh at Grove in Wickeham.
   All my interest in ten acres of meadow that I have in mortgage of John GASON, gent, to my sons Michael, Bartholomew, Robert and John, if Gason keep not his day to pay the money.
   John DURANT my brother my two tenements and lands which were late the church houses and lands of Litilbone for ever on condition he have a yearly Obit of 21d for William ADAM on Palm Monday for ever "according to the old custom" and another Obit for me and all souls of 21d. The Monday next before Whitsunday for ever. If the Obits are not kept the church wardens to enter and have for the use of the church.
   Residue after paying debts equally to all my sons.
   Ex’or – Son Richard, with Alice my wife, Thomas GULKING, Robert SYMES overseers, each to have 6s.8d.
   Witnesses – William HERING [died 1558, see his Will], Clarke, John ALLEN, Stephen TERNDEN, Thomas GULKING, John DURANT.
