Thomas BROWNE,
vicar of Litleborne, 20 August 1544 ?1540.
Buried in the chancel of my church of Litleborne
before the Blessed Sacrament where the priest is accustomed to stand at
the making of the holy water.
To the Church my Manual Processioner, and Hymnal (sic)
noted, all three being in print, also a book covered with white leather
containing the Story of St Vincent, and other things as appeareth.
If at the time of my death the tapers on the high altar be
burnt to the stumps or half spent, those stumps or ends to be taken
thence, and whole tapers set in their place, and bread and wine to sing
with be left in the box and botal belonging to the church, so that the
priest that shall come be not defrauded as I was.
At my burial 5 masses (1) of the day, (2) of the Name of
Jesus, (3) of the 5 Wounds, (4) of Our Lady, and one of Requiem.
To my successor my halling of red saye, as it hangeth in
the hall, new table, trestles and forms thereto, the close chayre I use
to sit in, my two best laders (sic) stones and brick, on condition he
take it (sic) for full contentation of the delapidations; if he will not
so do to have no part thereof, but to be satisfied as shall be approved
due; and then there remain to the Vicarage the old broken table in the
little chamber, the old stool and chair in my chamber.
Joan my sister have all my wood vessels for baking or
brewing stands and pots for ale, milk bolls, and other vessels for milk,
butter and cheese, my little spit, andirons, pothooks, pothanger,
gridiron, dripping pan, scorn’ fire tongs, little trivet and best
brass pot, also in pewter, 2 platters, 2 dishes, 2 saucers, the best
salt cellar, 12 trenchers, 2 table cloths of my own cloth and making, 2
candlesticks, if Joan live 30 days after my death, but if she die within
the time thens he to bestow half thereof (sic) [?as to other half].
